I hope this wasn't posted by anyone else but I just saw this on Alex Webster's Twitter today:

Amazon.com: Extreme Metal Bass: Essential Techniques, Concepts, and Applications for the Metal Bassist (9781423497158): Alex Webster, Cannibal Corpse: Books

I am definitely looking forward to getting this when it is released on September 15th.

I got it last week in the mail and really like it. There are some great exercises in there for both left and right hand techniques which is great. I really wanted a good explanation of his 3 finger right hand technique and there is a whole section devoted to that and other 2 and 3 finger exercises that are very helpful.

It wound up being pretty cheap getting it through Amazon so I can't recommend it enough and the exercises are really good for everyone. They are laid out for a 5 string bass to which really made me happy since that is what i play but they can be done on a 4 string as well.

It also comes with a cd with play alongs for the later lessons and each song is recorded both with and without bass so you can play along with the music kind of. He also includes the MIDI drums files so you can import them into GarageBand or Pro Tools.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants an ideal perspective on applying the bass guitar to extreme metal. His techniques are incredibly efficient and his explanation of scales and intervals is easy to interpret and thus perfect for a beginner.
He includes a list of preferred scales, modes and patterns that are typical of the genre and it's respective sub-genres, so you can get a condensed, more conventional approach. The .mp3 files on the CD that correspond to the exercises in the book kick ass too. Any fan of Cannibal Corpse will undoubtedly love this book. You can even find some useful philosophy in there.

Any of the Cannibal Corpse albums are going to have great playing by Alex but if Death Metal is not your cup of tea, you should check out Blotted Science. One Cannibal Corpse song I always recommend though is Frantic Disembowelment from the Wretched Spawn cd though. That song is just insane. Here it is without the vocals:

Cannibal Corpse - Frantic Disembowelment (Guitar, Bass & Dru - YouTube
