Swallow is a pick player & usually plays a 5-string bass (EADGC).

Fairly recent article in Bass Player mag where he talks about his one-of-a-kind bass & why he started using a pick (in his early electric abss days, a guitarist friend picked up Swallow's electric bass & just ripped with fast, legato lines...which impressed Swallow).

Sun Ra incorporated in electric bass to his more fusion-y music such as Lanquidity . While I'm sure he worked with a dedicated electric bass guitarist at some point in his very long career, he often had one of his horn players (Pat Patrick or Richard Williams come to mind) play the instrument. I know he typically used upright in his jazzy stuff, with Earl Boykins being the longest serving.

As far as strait-ahead jazz, I think Monk Montgomery is the only "classic" example.

I have Harvest on LP...a killer recording, IIRC.
I think I have Proud Flesh, too (a recent recording...5-6 years ago?). I don't recall that one KO-ing me out.
I just checked some bites at Amazon...I need to re-visit this one.

I do think they were a 'lab band'.

This reminded me of Nate McBride...he plays in Spaceways, Incorporated with Ken Vandermark & Hamid Drake. Their 1st album was called Thirteen Cosmic Standards by Sun Ra & Funkadelic.

I didn't know they had a more recent recording, I'll look that one up. My Matrix LPs are 30 years old. I always dug Tico's fretles playing and forget to mention him in the fretless threads, same thing with Ken Wild from Seawind & Roland Vazquez's bands.

sorry for the derail.......
