Fito Garcia - excellent Guatemalan bassist now based in Vancouver

Greetings!

This is my first post here on the "Bassists" forum...

My pianist friend heard Fito Garcia this summer at a music festival in Vancouver, B.C. (where Fito did a piece for four 6-string bassists), and bought Fito's CD there, which he then loaned to me.

The CD is called "Mi Bajo Rumbero" (My Rumba Bass) and I just can't get enough of it!!

The music is vocals (including Fito's wife Marlin Ramazzini) + persussion, with all the other parts played by various bass guitars, all of which are apparently played by Fito himself & Ignacio Cervantes.

Very much "up", energizing, fun Cuban/Latino tunes + one ballad.

The CD was produced by Fito, too.

My only problem with it is... the CD is too short.

Fito, if you're out there somewhere reading this: let's have MORE, ok? And SOON!!

This is an excellent CD, IMHO, and really deserves to be appreciated by more people, esp. us bassists.

Just wanted to bring it to folks' attention.

Thanks!!

p.s. - it can be bought through CD Baby, but they are currently (hopefully temporarily) out-of-stock.

Yes - turns out Fito is on Myspace, according to the liner of the CD:

edit: one of the things that strikes me about Fito on this CD (I'm listening to it right now) is how very "clean" his & Ignacio's playing/technique is... also, how musical Fito's compositions are.

Thanks for the post about Fito. I hope the word about him spreads around the forums more. He's worked really hard to put this stuff together and is a great guy to boot!

LM Bass,

Definitely my pleasure!!!

Fito is obviously a very talented guy, esp. on bass, and deserves recognition IMHO.

When my pianist friend gave me the CD to listen to, I was like "Yeah, sure, ok...".

Then I gave a listen and was really taken with the CD itself and Fito's playing and compositional skills.

Excellent tone, too. (Having a good, "rounded" bass guitar tone seems to be something of a lost art these days, IMNSHO.)

Several tunes on his CD have really stuck in my head.

The fact that Fito is also a good guy is perfect icing on the cake!

I hope he comes to Seattle in the near future...

p.s. - is that a 6-string F Bass he uses as his main instrument?

Not an F bass, but I don't think I can say without causing problems with the C.U.P. agreement. Fito probably plays in Seattle once in a while, he's very active on the Salsa and world music scene.

Thanks!

I just checked him out.

He's a native Cuban bassist who joined a band while traveling in Guatemala it seems.

So, either way he's latino and a darn good bassist!
