Flea Don't Sound Like Flea No More...

Sign in to disble this ad
Just got done checking out the new video and well, the Frusciante impersonator did a better job of blending in than FLea's new sound IMO. Nice big, fat, round, vintage style tone but did not sound like Flea. Where is the GK grind, the bite, the edge, that killer funk staccato? I don't know, maybe I am just biased but the switch to Acoustic just doesn't work for me but Flea must do what's best for Flea I guess.

I haven't checked out any of their new stuff besides that one single they released. Personally, I'll pass. I think they lost their mojo right at the beginning of Californiacation.

Flea hasnt done it for me since the one hot minute album.
Once he quit playing a 'Ray, he lost it for me.

He's actually said the change was intentional. He's grown up and matured, and says he doesn't feel the need to overplay and prove himself all the time anymore. He just wants to sound good and play some tasty stuff that's right for the songs.

Besides if anybody really wants to hear the "old" Flea that badly, that's what CD's are for.

+1 I bet Flea feels he has "been there, done that, got the t-shirt but didn't bother to wear it"

Pretty sure the Acoustic amps Flea is using now are the new USA made acoustics. Not the guitar center ones.

That being said the one new song I've heard was just a bad song Flea's tone was ok.

How many Mothers Milk and BSSM albums should they do before everyone says they have become boring??

Thats why they changed their style.

But Flea still has his moments. I just listened to By The Way and Stadium Arcadium yesterday and there are a LOT of great tones from Flea's bass on those albums.

One song's tone dosen't mean that the entire album is exactly the same.

What was "Suck My Kiss" recorded with?..........

That Wal bass has more balls than the Stingray.

I like his tone with a Jazz Bass.

What I've heard of the latest album is really REALLY boring. A bit of "overplaying" might just have saved it.

Keep in mind that I am not speaking as to Flea's technique, style or chops. Just his tone. Still sounded like Flea playing, just not through the right gear with the right tone. Great sound, just not the best for Flea's style of in-yo-face bass.

Actually most of the album was recorded with the wal.
He just used a ray for the video's because it looks better.
