To be honest I have no respect for the band anymore (I know it sounds cliche, like "oh I liked them when they were underground"). They've retracted any coolness they once had.

A good analogy is Paul McCartney. Wings was bad enough to retract all of the good that he did with the Beatles. And so the chilis have earned negative points on their last three albums, and are on their way to disgrace.

Lets take a scorecard out of ten of their albums (not including compoilations):

Red Hot Chili Peppers: +3
Freaky Styley:+4
Uplift Mofo Party Plan:+7
Mother's Milk:+6
Blood Sugar Sex Magik:+10
One Hot Minute:+1
Californication:-5
By The Way:-10 (oh how I'd love to give it a -10,000)
Staium Arcadium:-6

Ok so they're on +10 points still. Next album could be the breaker!

I'm glad to see he's smartening up! Jazz Bass + Old flats. That's all I read of the article. Although I dont and never really did like the Chilies I think Flea is finally mellowing out and I can respect him more now. Lets just hope he doesn't try to get Fender to rename the Jazz, "The Flea Bass"...

I think he sounds good on some songs on Stadium and not so good on others, he probably used a bunch of different basses.

Pesonally, I don't think you have to be "spiritual" in any way to be considered an artist, particularly not if you're a member of the Peppers, hell, what they play is usually four chords with a bunch of usually pretty inane lyrics on top. It always pains me when musicians take themselves so seriously.

No, I'm not a fanboy of pop-rock. Maybe if he played some music that I like, but ... no... I think Flea sucks. Apologies in advance to any Flea fans. LOL! Jive1 was totally right when he said bassists are passive-aggressive.

Let's just say I don't like his music. From an objective point of view, he does have the skill to play the bass; I just don't like it.

I don't think it is possible to even be an artist without being spiritual.

Whatever your take on religion...all things are possible because of God. He is the only "original" creator. Were it not for spiritual inspiration, nothing would have ever been created.

That's my take on it...and I'm sticking to it.

Thats funny, because I think most other bassists don't sound good. For example, Victor and Jaco, while I recognize their amazing skill, their music sounds like nails on the chalkboard for me. Flea is the only bassist I can really feel, and move to. I'm always looking for another bassist that will excite me as much as flea.

There's a reason these guys are bass players and not philosophers....

As far as bass playing goes, I personally get tired of the pop-music hating elitist musician types who hate anything that's on the radio. No virtuoso you ask will share that opinion. I enjoy everything from Michael Manring to Flea. Do I think Flea's skills are on the same level as Manring's? Of course not. But music isn't about either you're a virtuoso or you suck. Look at Miles. He hardly played any notes at all but everyone respects him. Anyway...
