Fred Thelonious Baker...Fortunate enough to have heard him!?

Sign in to disble this ad

Another Picture of Fred doing what he does...(note the tasteful shirt)

How many of you have heard of him, or heard his playing?

I mean, i read about him about 10 years ago in some bass magazine...I am now fortunate enough to have him teaching me at Birmingham Conservatoire in the UK this year.

I walked into a little pub where a few of the tutors and students were playing and I was floored...In lessons you really don't get to see someones true ability.

This man is a monster monster fretless player...and he only plays a squier for god's sake. Proof that the tools don't matter. He must easily one of the best fretless players around...

Read Fred's Wiki

I've put this here as I believe that not enough people know about Fred T Baker and his exceptional bass playing.

I just heard him on an "In Cahoots" song, Upside from All That, on Pandora and came to TB to find some info.

Very cool stuff, excellent fretless solo in that one particular song. Great tone too.

Must find more music by this guy!

I've heard quite a lot of his stuff. Pretty phenominal stuff. My music teacher told me about him (he knows him)

Check out his solo bass cd from 1989 called "Missing Link".

For people that want to hear/see more, I'm gonna ask him really nicely if i can record him doing a few of his solo bass pieces.

Kev, who do you learn with? I live in Milton Keynes, but study in Birmingham at the conservatoire.

I have a few Phil Miller CDs he plays on. Good player for sure...how much of that Canterbury-style fusion is still happening in the UK?

To be honest I have no idea how much of it goes on, I guess not a lot as you don't really see it.

But if you want videos of fred playing (I took them at the end of my lesson today) go to my blog at http://funkyniblets.blogspot.com/. Keep an eye out, I will put better quality ones up when I can get them, if you want to be notified click the RSS tab.

I saw him live a few years ago with Vikki Clayton. Incredible player, if I remember correctly he played Toccata in D minor!

Actual and artificial harmonics a plenty in that one.

Hey, yeh that's me! You might have to remind me who you are though I'm really bad with remembering people. My music teacher (as in a level subject) is different to my bass teacher. My bass teacher is Dirk Griffin

Hi
Saw Fred recently - in Ballymoney - with the Lianne Carroll Trio. He was fantastic. He has moved on from the Squire to a Custom job. Jazz style - exotic woods, etc. He told me what pickups he was using, but, I don't seem to have that information anymore. My short term memory isn't what it... What was I saying again?

I used to have lessons with him...really cool guy! He was a HELLUVA player! Even on my last lesson he made me feel like a complete amatuer with just one stroke - I wonder if he's on here anywhere?

EDIT: Oh yeah, he wanted my '89 green MIJ jazz and my '99 white MIM jazz when I was having lessons...the guy plays a MIJ Squier fretless jazz from 81-82...I've just recently found a new point of contact for him outside of huddersfield uni
