I have a Fender MIM P and rarely even touch it. It's not the greatest bass in the world but the challenge to get that tone would be worth the experimentation. Whenever I pick up a P-bass, I run through that very lick to set my tone.

That is the classic bright roundwound, full treble, P-bass slap tone. That used to be my favorite slap tone of all until I subconsciously became a Jazz bass oriented player.
