Now is that not like the coolest thing you've ever seen??

http://mike-sabre.com/dipiazza/dipiazza.html I wonder if it REALLY works that well...

-Kyle

P.S. It's in bassists because Dominique Dipiazza is incredible

It's a rather old design that doesn't sound as good when you use it as when Di Piazza does.
The resulting resonance is interesting but in no way could it replace a fretless or make a fretted sound like one.

Interesting...

Seems somewhat like the Danelectro Sitar Guitar concept where the witness point of the saddle is less defined, giving it that warble. Being made of wood is interesting too.

Yes it works just like the Sitar Guitar, except that it does actually works.
Basically the vibration of the string dampens on the wooden blades just like it does against the board of a fretless.

Well, given how it sounds when Di Piazza plays it, it seems that it can sound very much like a fretless. I would never dream of putting myself in anything close to the same league as DDP but it certainly can be done with that bridge so to me, it warrants investigation.

I can't wait to read about your experience with this bridge.

What kind of bass do you plan to use it on?

Custom made, but essentially a 5 string J style with Villex pickups. Chris Stambaugh made the neck for me a few years back, and it's a killer.

I'm wondering about the practicability of installing piezo elements in one of these bridges...

According to the website, above, they offer 4- and 5-string bridges that range from 180 to 265 Euros ($258 to $345)

Thank you! Subscribed for Marcus, haha. I've been interested in the bridge since I saw the vid a while back. If I had one I'd throw it on my fretless for st00pid mwah! I wonder if that'd actually work?

Interesting.
Subscribed.

Fretless-like tone with fretted accuracy. Interesting.

Can it sound fretted or is it always "fretless" tone.

So let me get this straight, it sorta acts like a wooden dampener of sorts?

Based on what I can gather, it seems to me to be this:

The reason a fretless bass sounds the way it does is because although you have a definite witness point at the saddle, you have a indefinite takeoff point at the other end...the other end being your much softer and broader finger.

What this system seems to do is just reverse that. Now the indefinite point is moved to the saddle which is wooden and sloped. Really more of a sitar-like effect, but fretless like in some respects.

Anyway, that's my understanding of it. I'll know more in a few weeks.

Fascinating... I'm gonna take this with a grain of salt though, because despite the video, I have a feeling it doesn't quite work that well, but I would love to try it.
