Tony Franklin immediately springs to mind.

And maybe I'll get bashed for this, maybe not, but Les Claypool really sticks out in my book. If you watch any of his live videos where he uses his 6 string fretless Rainbow Bass, he really uses the lack of frets to full effect.

Yeah, no joke there!!!!
Lack of frets to full effect indeed.
So much so you would think he's playing out of tune

There are a lot of great fretless players...

I like Pino, Manring among others but my fav is probably Gary Willis. Actually, I think he is awesome, period. I prefer his version of "the chicken" by Jaco to the original , its just so damn nasty. He is absolutely killing it imho, the video is on youtube.

Likewise. And he's always playing with monsters. I need to get some of the post-BENT material. Since these later albums seem to be about soundscapes and improv he's got my attention since he's about more than just being facile with changes. He's got big ideas and everything he plays develops.

I also want to hear how deep he is into programming the V-Bass. Willis and I have that and fretless in common, if nothing else ; }. I want to hear how he uses it and how it fits in with his bigass bassy fretless tone. He's done well adding some non-traditional approaches to bass voices in the past.

I like Manring, Bromberg, Mark Egan, Tony Franklin and of course Steve Lawson and Eddie Castro. Egan and Bromberg were my heros in the 80's. The dude who did Lou Reeds Wild Side had a huge impact on how I tried to play for a while as well. When I heard heard Thonk, I think it changed my whole perspective of what a fretless could do. Oh yeah, I like my own fretless playing.

Ah, yeah - Fernando Saunders. Definitely helped Lou's music have more dimension. Kinda dug Jack Bruce with Lou too.

For fretless tone in "country" I've enjoyed what Nashville cat Michael Rhodes has done.
