No idea, but according to Ron Wickersham of Alembic when Phil got it back from him he asked "Gee Ron, do I really need 20 knobs on my bass?"

The Godfather!

The silver knob controlled the lysergic acid IV drip.

The Godfather. I think many of the knobs controlled the Alembic filter.

No mention of the LD-25 knob, but here's some more scoop on the knobs:

The filters on both the Guild and the Alembic basses allow for 32 tone settings, with a mixing of filtered and flat response signals from the pickups. The filter modules contain controls for Q (resonance), bandwidth, frequency reponse, and filter mode (to allow for lowpass, bandpass, highpass, and notch filtering). The filters are essentially Phil's design, though Alembic built them, and George Munday redesigned them to Phil'specifications.
