Got to see these guys for a little while at Tipitina's a few nights ago. Being a bassist, it was the first thing i looked for. This cat was real laid-back, complimentary to the music and was having fun too, he let loose on some turnarounds and had some quick little solo sections. Really good player on upright and electric( it was a '60s reissue black j-bass). More than anything, his tone really struck me as awesome. I couldn't see what he had on his rack but I'm pretty sure it was above a Berg 2x15 cab-real nice low end and a strong vintage thump. Anybody know this guy's name or anything about his rig?
Cheers

Ok, i searched and answered my own question. Timo Shanko is his name and he's known in the jazz circuit as primarily a saxophonist first.....nice to see such a refreshing and accomplished multi-instrumentalist. Go see these guys if yall can, its a really fun show.

The show I was going to got cancelled, seems like I really missed out. Bergs have great, I would kill to have a nice setup by them.

Actually it's just G Love and Special Sauce. I saw them back in 94 i believe it was. Once at the Uptown bar in minneapolis which is a tiny little bar but a lot of great bands have played there. They played First Ave bout 6 months later, went to that one too. Great band. First album is really great. Kind of lost track of them though. Might have to look up some new stuff.

Saw them back in '92. Great band and nice guys too. The original has changed a lot since then though

I really loved their first two albums, and that incarnation of the band with Jimmy Jazz was incredible live. Then I saw them with another bass player in Boulder in 97, and it was one of the worst shows I'd ever seen, and it kind of ruined them for me. Maybe they're good again--that would be excellent.

Shanko's relatively unknown nationally, but in Boston is known as a first call player on either bass or sax. The night I saw him he was throwing in Jaco quotes, adding the "River People" to a funk groove and filling up the band sound, which is needed since G. Love doesn't have a rhythm guitarist. Shanko also performs and records on sax with The Slip (they have a great bass player too.)
