It's kind of funny. I appreciate the musicianship in Springsteen's band but I am not a fan of the music. I'm not sure what it is but I just never got into it.

Me either. Songs just rambled too much. Springsteen and Geddy, a pair of duds for me. Can't stand to listen to either of them.

Geez. Tough crowd! I thought his last album "Wrecking Ball" was one of his best. As for variety he has plenty to choose from. Everything from Jungleland, Nebraska, Dancing In The Dark and the Pete Seeger stuff. All quite different yet all good IMO.

Bruce is a badass. Saw him two years ago and it was impressive. Most guys on the forum couldn't do half of what he does at age 63.

That may be but it's still not music I play for enjoyment

I do like Garry Tallent, though. Not a flashy guy but he plays well and does some session work, so people must like him.

Always thought he was a great player, and great for that band. Not an easy gig.

Interestingly, I thought the first two 'pre E Street band' albums were by far his best. That stuff is KILLER. I remember seeing him at the old Fox Theatre in 1972 or 73 with David Sancious on keys, and I think 'mad dog' or whatever his original drummer was called Amazing show, almost 4 hours.

I lost interest when he started using Max on drums... talk about 'no swing'. Can't stand that guy's playing.. literally can't listen to it. Like Carl Palmer... all boom, no groove to my ears.

Love the Boss though, especially those two amazing early albums

Edit: That 911 Tribute (The Rising) is quite something also.... very impressive writing that really captured a lot of what was going on in people's heads at that time.

I agree, Garry's playing on the earlier albums was looser and more R&B based and after Landau came aboard and jettisoned Lopez, the rhythm section became more "economic" and played more for the songs. I still dig all the whole catalog though, and Bruce will always be at the top of my list of rock acts that I dig.

Love Garry Talent's playing, and cool to find out he worked on "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" which is a great album. Also have to agree with the Max hate- I remember hearing the opening drum beat to "Born In The USA" on the radio and immediately thinking that the old Boss I loved was dead and gone. Glad that's not entirely true, but the earlier stuff is definitely his best work in my opinion.

I am sure Vini Lopez will love your opinions. When I see him today for lunch I will tell him. For some fun, go to YouTube and search Vini Lopez and his recent performance in NJ on the Wrecking Ball tour. The are doing "EStreet Shuffle". Like the best version of new and old.

Not a big fan of the boss, but when someone is that popular for that long, there is always a good reason. I saw him live in the early 80's and he definitely delivered, giving everything, something that few major acts do.

Regarding Tallent: there are guitarist bass players and bassists bassplayers and he is definitely the former; a group who's members are often overlooked.

I didn't know he produced Lucinda Williams best album. Wow! More props to another hardworking player who is in it for the music and not the limelight!

Being from NJ- I guess I'll weigh in. I think the e-street band's (including Springsteen) aim is to put on a good rock & roll show. the songs are constructed to be a song without anyone in particular standing out - with the exception of "highlighting" the sax or a particular guitar part. If Bruce is featured it's because he writes the songs and he was the one with the original record contract and he hired the band. - I always liked gary talent. his bass parts are always (IMO) perfect support for the song- he's a working bassist, so I'm sure he takes direction from the songwriter, but the parts are probably his own.

Anyone who has any questions about Garry Tallent being under-rated should check out the 12.12.12 concert, especially the live broadcast from Palladia (network). The bass is mixed quite forward and it's great.

I believe it was Garry Tallent who stated "I am the guy who you don't notice until I am not there" (heavily paraphrased, but something to that effect)

My $0.02, is that the world of bass-playing (and music in general) would be quite improved if more people felt that way.

I run a bit hot and cold on Bruce Springsteen and even the E Street band. But that 12.12.12 set is great - worth checking out just for Mr. Tallent.

No disrespect intended, but did anyone else notice that he looks like the actor Denis O'Hare who plays Russell Edgington (character from True Blood) ?

Being a big fan of him, I'll try to find that show's footage.

By the way, IMO he looks a lot like Sam Sheppard:
