Maybe he is bald and wants to avoid the doo-rag/wig wearing fiasco that followed Frank Gambale for years. The cap is definately not a bad look.

It gives him that "regular Joe" look that clashes with his unbelievable abilities. I like it.

I don't recall him wearing a cap the first time I saw him (with Holdsworth).

I would imagine that as an avid mountain biker he started to wear them to avoid sunburn on his head (happened to me when I had shaved my head once - not a pleasant experience) and he's become used to it/his "thing".

As long as Gary doesn't go with the Kevin DuBrow (Quiet Riot) look....
his wig is too funny....

Part of his "look", ala Marcus Miller and his goofy hat.

Marcus' "goofy" hat look was borrowed from Lester Young.

I really like that look (not the vampire-thing).

That is disturbing. I was going to say that without his cap he looks like anyone's next door neighbor, but I wouldn't want the guy on that little animation living anywhere near me...

(Willis is the s**t, by the way)

I have no way of knowing for sure, but part of me wants to believe he wears it because he's insecure about his thinning hair. If that *is* the case then the answer is simple: shave your head. This isn't the 60's/70's when the only guys who shaved their heads were Yul Brynner & Telly Savalas. You can't go anywhere these days without seeing guys with shaved heads.

It blows me away that someone who is revered so much as a musician could still feel insecure inside about something like hair. But look at Al DiMeola - he got a rug or plugs or implants or something so he was obviously insecure about his thinning hair, and yet he's one of the most idolized guitarists on the planet.

Rugs, implants, toupes, & especially combovers are LAUGHABLE. The only people who think they look good are the people who have them. The rest of the world thinks they look ridiculous.
