Cool Geddy Lee's New Basses

Did anyone else notice an extreme difference in the weathering on Geddy's basses from the Time Machine to Clockwork angels tour? These are his two '72 jazzes. I would find it hard to believe that he would send his main axe into fender, or whatever, and pay to have it beat up like the road worn stuff that Fender has now, but it appears he did something like that...

Also, on a side note, I love his new custom shop (which was obviously weathered by Fender or a luthier, since it's new). I saw them in Seattle last month and he played it on The Wreckers and one or two others that I can't remember. Anyone know the purpose of this one?

It's not uncommon for a touring artist to have clones made of their vintage or "special" instruments.

I happen to know a couple of touring players with major country acts that have had Fender do this for their rare strats.

It's very difficult to tell the difference by looking at them.

I'm fine with antiquing instruments. I just think it's silly to pay for the antiquing -- especially when it's an assembly line version with hundreds of others similarly weathered.

As for Geddy's basses, for some reason, sunburst looks cool beaten up, the others just look junky. But that's me.

I agree. I hate the "road worn" thing. Pay someone to beat up your new bass? I prefer to add the wear the old fashioned way.

I'm also not fond of the artificial wear. The black and the blue jazzes have the EXACT same "wear."

From what I was reading, he replaced the neck for the Time machine tour and it is THE black J. But I'm skeptical too...

Good eye. It would be amazing how those two chips of paint would come off in the exact same place near the strings AND be the same shape.

Well, they aren't exactly the same, though I think it's safe to say they were " distressed" by the same machine or templates.

Nevertheless, I very seriously doubt it's "The bass".

I remember he used the seafoam bass on The Garden, too. Of course the red J was there for 2112 encore.

Thought the black was THE bass, but with new neck as others noted above.

Regardless - they sounded awesome!

I don't see why Geddy would 'wear' his precious Black J after so many years handling it with care...

He should switch the Lakland USA Js. That would be awesome. No relicing needed.

If thats THE main black 72, im sure he didnt have Fender road wear it for him. Hes been playing it off and on since the 70s and road worn it the real way. The blue one was made by a guy who is also here on TB, and he may chime in.

Maybe you're right... this photo of THE black j looks like it's got the same wear of the picture the op posted.

He's using new basses. The necks don't have the black inlay and pickguard is different. The inlay is the same white pearl as the pickguard.

He is using new basses but his main 72 has changed necks...could be a couple of times now...Im not sure but I know he plays that the majority of the time.

Now, if he would bust out the Ric, Steinberger and Wal as well that would be awesome!
