Nice find! I'm currently working on learning the song, so this should be really helpful

you can hear 2 basses playing at the same time during the riff (and a third bass does the solos)

He just double-tracked and re-recorded parts because I'm sure he wanted it to sound perfect on the record without any slip-ups that might have happened if he played it straight through.

Yup, sounds like one bass to me as well. Maybe some fill tracks here and there and the solos sound inserted and when the keys kick in the bass just cuts out sharply. I'd bet that is all do to the editing process.

And I'd bet a lot of the fill type stuff heard in the main riff has more to do with sympathetic vibrations and open strings ringing out. I defy anyone to play that hard and fast and not have the same issues.

As to the track being isolated, thanks! I now feel even more inadequate as a bass player....

But still, Geddy is a great player and I love that song!

Listen to this one -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5MYT...eature=related

You can really hear how hard Geddy digs in. You can hear the fret buzz the fret and (possibly) strings clacking off the pups and the other strings ringing out in faster sections! Listen especially at about 4:22...

Not only that listen to where and how Geddy adds or plays notes that you really never knew were there. Where he digs in and breaks or adds emphasis....fantastic!

Wow! I didn't know Geddy was using doublestops way back then. There are not near as many as there are on the last two albums, but there are at least 4 or 5 times where I could hear a root & five being played together. And I don't think it was two basses, the way that it was articulated sounded like that infitesimal delay you get when you rake a doublestop.

YYZ always seemed to be one of those "audition pieces" for bands in college. It was inevitable... either the guitarist or drummer would (half) jokingly suggest it or start playing it. I would just go with it and see if they could actually play it! Got a few gigs that way. Never actually played a cover it of it live though, probably for the best.

Good playing but clearly not authentic at all-way too many dubbed inserts throughout the song from the original recording

Weird. I didnt bother listening to that youtube link until now and that does sound like different pieces/basses...hmm...if you download the files I spoke of earlier and my friend OriginalCrash linked to, it doesnt sound like that at all. The only parts that sound like overdubs in the files I have are the solo runs.
