I caught the local stop on the "Heaven and Hell Tour" here in the greater San Diego area on Thursday night. It had the Black Sabbath lineup from Mob Rules (Dio, Iommi, Butler, and Appice).
Appice got a true unaccompanied drum solo.
Iommi got two extended solos/breakdowns in addition to the requisite minimum one solo per song arrangement that Sabbath typically has.
Geezer got nothing. Nada. No intro's. No breakdowns. Nothing.
If it's any karmic justice, the camera operator probably devoted half of the big screeen shots to Geezer's ridiculously impressive looking right hand movments which were a constant blur because of his speed. Too bad the audio mix wasn't more favorable to him, his distortion caused him to be fairly undefined in the amphitheater setting they played.
The Dio years weren't the strongest for Butler's material, but still, it was disappointing to have him on stage in front of me, visible in camera closeups but not really ever standing out in the mix either because of a noticibly absent solo spot or PA levels. |

I never liked the NIB solo intro, but I love that when Iommi starts soloing, Geezer is right behind him mini soloing... it fills up the sound and sounds awesome.

Later on in the set I did a small slap and pop thing along with the guitar. People we coming up congratulating me on my solo - they went on to describe the slap section of the latter song.
Better yet, I didn't actually care. As long as the show flows and the songs sound good I'm happy. And to be more on-topic I prefer the Heaven and Hell years for Geezer as well. Great tone and excellent playing.

The stuff with Dio often feels like they are remaking the song "Paranoid" with a better vocalist, especially when acquiring Appice as their drummer. They became a fully realized heavy metal band that didn't offer anything particularly different from the peers that they had at the time who'd been influenced by them. The original sound that set them apart was more or less lost, along with a more prominant role for Geezer. Quote:

They were excited to play some new tunes they had written for the new compilation "The Dio Years." It's in stores now, coincidentally enough. |

I find that if I keep 'em rhythmically very hip, phrased with plenty of air, and short, I can excuse myself for doing them. I have no way of knowing how they go over though, actually, because no one in the room ever says anything about them.
Hmmm...

i totally love the dio years. every song on heaven in hell is great, and there are only a couple off of mob rules i don't like. i'm not familiar with the 3rd dio-led sabbath release. i think the song 'mob rules' is one the best songs sabbath ever did in their entire career. and the main guitar riff in 'the sign of the southern cross' is one of the most ominious and frightening riffs in history. it still gives me chills whenever i hear it. |

Exactly. Maybe I'm strange for saying it, but if offered a bass solo spot (and it's been offered) I decline.
