I didnt see a thread giving this guy his props, so I decided to start one.

Theres so much good house out there and he's on a lot of it.

And just as a fyi, Bill Dickens was/is on a lot of house records too. Some nasty tasty stuffis.

But heres to Gene, sick sick groover.

Do you have a link to the actual track. It sounds pretty hot. What artist did the tune?

The producer in the vid did the track. He's also a house dj/producer.

Louis Benedetti's website www.soulshine.net has some different mixes I think you can preview and download.

Also, one of my goto sites for music, www.traxsource.com has all kinds of house tracks that gene played bass on. You'd be amazed at his body of work, because house in the states is only slightly coming back. But house overseas has been huge eversince it was created. Brighton is like a house mecca.

He was the go-to guy for masters at work. Which they split last year or so, but gene still does sessions for them both. Louie vega, 1/2 of MAW, now has a live latin house band that gene plays bass in.

Do some diggin at traxsource, and listen to fullhouseradio, and youll start to hear house music with some of the sickest bass lines to come out of dance music.

I typed in gene perez, the name of the track is bottoms up.

I've loved Gene's playing ever since I first heard the MAW Nuyorican soul disc. He has a great sound as well as killer chops. I think that's some low action on that bass.

Happy to be of service.

I think he also played on "nights over egypt", another good tune.

Not that I want you to start downloading all types of stuff.

His tone is more or less my tone too. It just works.

I was a big fan of house music when it first came out in chicago on B96 on friday nights.

At the same time I would listen to Anthrax " im the man"

So all the newish musical house origionals and mixes I try to keep up with. I dig it because its danceable, but you can put jazz changes on it, have musical scores on top, have soulful vocals too.

But then I also listen to Kid606, Dalek, and other crazy stuff.

I've been a longtime fan of Gene Perez playing and lately I've been listening again to his MAW cuts, and also to this "bottom's up" track. Apart from feel, do you know how he gets that sound? On the video he seems to have light strings with low action, using a light touch.

I'm trying to approach this tone on my jazz bass but I think the setup is really important... do the bass need to have a very straight neck or a slight bow in it? Also It seems to me that it's more difficult to get that tone using 45-105 regular strings. I've tried light strings in the past and while they are easier to play and allow more expression, I think there's a trade-off in sound. Would you say he uses some compression to fatten up the sound of the light strings?
