George Porter Jr.

Just glad to say that I'm so lucky that a cat like this plays so much around my city and is so accessible and friendly. I grew up in New Jersey playing Meter's tunes in garage bands in high school and always have considered him a primary influence. Just showin some love for the man behind the chicken grease...
On a sidenote, i think he's semi-retired his old P-bass for a Lakland Glaub. It's a natural finish with a maple board. Believe me, though, still sounds like him.
Cheers to anyone who's also been influenced by Mr. Porter

Been listening to The Meters for a long time... I would like to think that some of that "grease" has rubbed off on me.
One of the best REAL low-down Funk bass players ever, IMHO.
His pocket presence, to me, is other-worldy. Would love to hear/see him play 'Live'... )-(

Last I heard he was still using his old P with a backup made from Warmoth parts.

Anybody confirm/refute the Lakland rumor?

I lived in NOLA for several years in the 80's.
George is a class act. He'd always take time to talk to other bassists.
He even helped me heave my bass rig at jazz-fest once!

Mr. Porter Jr. is indeed using the Glaub willy's talking about, but the old P is not completely retired. I have even seen him using a 5 string in some recent pictures, but I can't identify the brand. Check out the pics.

He is a regular user of Facebook and is always turning up in other people's photo galleries with that big genuine smile. One of my ultimate bass heroes and a pretty darned good singer too! Go Friend him!

I just picked up the PBS album a couple weeks back, and one of the greatest things is, after 40 years his legacy is still growing. One of the best ever!

A question for those who know George's body of work: what recommendations would you make (CD wise) for someone wanting to listen to Mr Porter as a bassist and for great songs?

If you want to just check out one song "Just Kissed My Baby" by the Meters still sends chills up my spine!

Sundazed (label) put out some reissue cd's of the Meters stuff a few years ago. I think it was remastered because the sound quality seemed a lot better than a couple "greatest hits" Meters cd's I have. Those might be worth checking into....

Check this DVD and CD out if you are unable to see the meters live:

DVD - Funky Meters - Live From The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival
CD - Funkify Your Life: The Meters Anthology (like 40 songs)

The Meters:
Funkify Your Life: The Meters Anthology (1995), Rhino +1!
Uptown Rulers: The Meters live on the Queen Mary (1992), Rhino -- the Meters playing on the Queen Mary for Paul Macartney's Birthday Party.

For some variety, also check out:
- The Robert Palmer record Sneakin' Sally through the Alley (which also features Lowell George and Allen Toussaint)

- The Wild Tchoupitoulas record (there's only one) which is a hybrid Meters and Neville Brothers group starring their uncle George Landry (Big Chief Jolly).

These all feature George Porter Jr. in full greasy glory.
I'm gonna go listen to some of this now!

George is the man and a great reminder that it's not always what you play, but also what you don't play.

IIRC these are photos I took at the 1984 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
