I have listened to Cissy Strut about 100 times in my life time, but never thought to get the rest of the self titled Meters album. My band doesnt have a singer, so anything without lyrics and a good jam is us.
Porter Jr. just tears up! I have always played Cissy Strut to my best abilities, but songs like Here Comes the Meter Man, and Live Wire are very intricate, but so funky! My drummer and guitarist love The Roots, Phish, and Gnarls Buckley and they just fell in love with these guys, as I told them they would.
I guess Im just stating my first full opinion on George Porter Jr., and the best jam funky band, IMO.

Porter, Batiste & Stoltz is the newer version of the Meters, minus Art Neville. They've got an album called Expanding The Funkin' Universe. George plays a bit busier, and it's mighty groovy as well! I especially like a tune called "Ouw". They often team up with Bonerama, a multi-trombone outfit.

BOT is another band to check out, for you Meters fans.

I remember hanging out at this outside cafe in the French Market in high school. They had a small combo that would play on weekend nights. We hung out by a fountain kind of far from the stage, so we really couldn't see the faces of the musicians. Sweet music and great basslines - it was only after a few weeks walking by the stage that I realized is was Porter on bass.
I love the straight forward funk of the line in "People Say" - then he and Leo throw in the tandem run line - like the recent documentary about NOLA music says "make it funky".

Anyway...in the spirit of suggesting music to check out, the other day I busted out "The In Sound from the Way Out" by...The Beastie Boys. It is like a modern-day Meters album. All instrumental. Very cool stuff. |

Looking forward to seeing them play near my area in July.
Porter (as Mojo-Man said) also sounds great on John Scofield's new Piety Street CD, a collection of blues/jazzy/funk spirituals with Jon Cleary (Bonnie Raitt's band and his own groups) on keys and vocals, NOLA singer John Boutte and drummer Ricky Fataar. Easily one of my favorite discs of the year. I understand that Roland Guerin, another great NOLA bassist, is doing the Sco tour. |

Not sure if he's there every Thursday, but I know he does some of those gigs as The Trio, with Porter (or James Singleton) on bass, Johnny V on drums and a third musician -- sometimes saxophonist Skerik. |
