Getting Shavo's tone

I've never really liked Shavo's tone especially his live tone, up untill recently. Now I love it (almost as much as the band), but I can't think how to get it at all.

Occording to Daron Malakian, Daron played 99% of the bass parts on the records with a Fender. He said he didn't want to bother teaching Shavo the parts. Its a Shame that Daron become such an egomaniac and ruined the band.

Last I heard Shavo was doing film production work?

The live tone is incredibly straightforward, you can see how he got it: downtuned Thunderbird through a cranked SVT. You've got the SVT, and it seems like downtuning the ESP or Spector should get you pretty close. I honestly don't think there was anything else going on there, aside from probably some EQ and compression in the PA mix.

The studio sound is harder to tell, partly because half the time he's being doubled by the low-tuned guitar, so a big part of that crunchy low tone is the fact that there are two instruments playing the part. In the non-doubled moments, the bass sounded a little distorted, but not especially special.

just got pretty close with my spector is C, with the neck pup only. Didn't think it would be that easy, all it needed was heavy attack right at the end of the fingerboard, fair bit of input gain and boosting the mids and highs a little. I thought there might have been something in the chain to give it that breaking up kind of sound.

Yeah the heavy attack and resulting fret buzz/slap is a big part of the "distortion".
