I was always facinated by the fact that parts played on a song/album are not always performed by the band's "official" bass player.

For example - all bass parts on the Bon Jovi albums (all of them) were done by Hugh McDonald, not Alec Jon Such, the band's bassist for a major of the group's existence (especially in their late 80's- early 90's heyday).

I've also hear rumors that some tracks performed on KISS albums were not recorded by Gene Simmons...

Does anyone know of other examples of this? Besides Danny Partridge, of course...

Steve Bailey claims to have ghosted on a few rock albums.
Of course he's not telling which ones

Bob Babbit said he ghosted for Gene Simmons.

There's the Pink Floyd bass "situation".

I think glen campbell "ghosted" for Peter Tork.
I thought Carol Kay (sp?) ghosted for Gene Simmons.

True, but I was thinking of more of a player outside of a band's fold - like if Carol Kaye played on the 'Animals' album!

Gene Simmons has mentioned in print several times that he didn't play on all of the KISS stuff. He didn't even play bass on his solo record - Neil Jason did.

I heard just the opposite, that he refused Gene. I'd be curious
what the truth is there.

If he wants the moniker, I will yield to his superior abilities.

Gene didn't take credit for it either. Just guitar and vocals.

Back in the old tape days mistakes happened and bass tracks occasionally got erased, usually just a section but sometimes an entire track went missing. Very often the offending engineer would call in some reliable player to fix the bumble as they were afraid to fess up or if the real player was not available, on tour or too stoned. That reliable player would be able to quickly cop the right tone, feel, attitude and could be trusted to not make a big deal out of the secret work. Ghost players usually left with a nice bit of budget money in pocket and lots of good will from engineers and producers.

I hear billy corgan recorded the bass parts instead of D'arcy. In fact, I read it in an interview with D'arcy. Oh, I'm talking about the smashing pumpkins.

Famous example from history:

Dennis Wilson did not play drums on many of the Beach Boys recordings.

Nor did Brian play bass, for that matter...

Roger Waters had a Ghost right up there on stage with him this last time I saw him. It didn't really take away from the greatness of what I was seeing though.

Drummers are usually the ones most ghosted on recordings.

About Kiss albums, I've heard that many tracks on "Dynasty" aren't played by Gene but by Mike Porcaro or Jimmy Haslip, I don't know anyway if these informations are correct.....
