according to Mitch mitchell Jimi played bass[upsidedown naturally] on alot of the experience recording as Norl got bored easily and went to the pub.

He placed the cromatic run at the outro of hey Joe and played on all along the watchtower also and I love the bass on that that, can anyone shed any light on some.

Also apprently Dave Gilmour played the bass on Animals which surprised as I thought it was Rogers best bass playing, anyone validate or condemn this?

Noel also wasn't around when Hendrix recorded "Voodoo Chile" for Electric Ladyland. Jack Casady plays bass on that one.

Gilmour played bass on a lot of Floyd's recordings, not just Animals. Roger Waters was pretty good but in my opinion rather unimaginative and mostly just held down the groove, which would explain why Gilmour played some of the more challenging lines (fretless on Hey You, etc).

I heard Jimi played bass on "Spanish Castle Magic", not sure.

And don't confuse slow blues "Voodoo Chile" for "Slight Return" - I think Jack also played on "Rainy Day, Dream Away" and "Still Rainin', Still Dreamin'".

I doubt if Noel played on "Long Hot Summer Night". I should investigate.

Jimi also played bass on some Curtis Knight stuff. Scroll down about 1/2 way to see the Man with an 8-string.

I never paid much attention to Pink Floyd's bass parts. There's next to nothing on the first two albums.

Yeah, I know, I left off the "slight return" part. It was late. Steve Winwood played on it, too.

Jack played on the slow one, the long song on Side A. I don't think he played on Slight Return.

The liner notes state that Winwood and Casady (misspelled as Cassidy on my album) play on slight return, but it makes more sense that it would be the long one.

Seriously, aren't there enough threads on both these worn out topics?

Rainy Day , Dream Away and Still Rainin , STill Dreamin is Mike Finnigan on doubling on organ.

Jimi played on at least half of the Electric LAdyland album . Noel was becoming more frustrated with the group and would leave so Hendrix would put down the bass parts. Hendrix's bass parts are a perfect mix of groove and driving power. I know he owned a couple of basses including a Rickenbacker which Im sure he used , and he probably used Noel's jazz bass alot . There is a whole webpage devoted to Hendrix playing bass .http://www.djnoble.demon.co.uk/ints/JimionBass.html

These must be CD liner notes - I don't recall an organ on "Slight Return".

The album liner notes don't credit any "freinds and passengers" playing on "Slight Return".

Edit:Thanks for the link.

No organ on Slight Return . Stevie Winwood played organ on Voodoo Chile not Voodoo Child (SLight Return). There is a difference

According to that link Jimi didn't play any bass on Axis, so I'm probably misinformed about Spanish Castle Magic.

I went down Memory Lane and took a couple of pictures. It doesn't look like they were making it known that Jimi played bass with Curtis Knight. The other one...the first time I heard "Slight Return" it was live.

I have heard from more than one source (the other I read...just can't remember where) that Jimi played an 8-string Hagstrom bass on "Spanish Castle Magic".

Yes, they are CD liner notes. They say it's Winwood on Slight return. I know there's no organ on it, never said there was. That's part of how I figured out the notes were wrong.

That's cool. There are about 2 other threads going on the 1st page alone talking about the Gilmour/Waters debate, though.

If you have ever been in the studio it is no secret that the "bassist" might play guitar and the "drummer" might play bass or the "guitarist" might play bass on a track.

Studio time is expensive and unless you have PRACTICED the tunes you don't want to waste the time. Many times the WRITER of the tune will play most of the parts. IT IS COMMON PRACTICE.

I always got the feeling that after the music was written Waters really didn't give a crap who played it. he considered himself a CONDUCTOR.

To make it easier to understand:

Bass player writes a tune. He comes in the studio and lays down Bass and rythm guitar. The guitarist lays down a lead and the singer does the vocals.
