CocoBass19, I played with a male high school student drummer with adhd, an early 20's male guitarist with interesting "fashionable" chords, an early 40's absolutely awesome male professional keyboard/hammond organ player (our lead) and an early 60's female synthesizer player with a very liberal sense of time. I'm 44. Three of us with very different tastes picked out our music so we had a good mix, and the keyboard player was very patient with those of us who were new and learning. Despite the diversity, we worked very well as a band. Unfortunately I had a lot of change in my life about a year and a half ago and had to quit. Others drifted in and out, too, so it's a very different group now.

We really didn't have any problems that were male/female differences. Our problems were more just general musician stuff. I like hard rock, keys likes sappy music, guitarist likes acoustic guitar with no bass, drummer was late after fills, synth player didn't have a clue sometimes, bass player couldn't hear herself play and was anal about the music going where it was suppose to - that sort of stuff. Nothing to make anyone mad or not work together over though.

I'm wondering, what kind of differences of opinion and feelings would be gender related? Genuinely wondering, if you don't mind sharing...

Wow, 43 pages and no pissin' contests, flame wars or otherwise general bad behavior (from the ladies anyway ). Some dudes around here could probably stand to learn a thing or 2 from this.

I don't have the right parts for this club, just popping to say hi and welcome all.

As far as smaller hands/hand strength, etc. One thing that I use to keep my strength up is doing the song "Stuck in the middle with you" from Stealers Wheel (steelers?, dunno). It's in D, or at least we do it in D, so start with your pinky on the D (5th fret on the A string) and play the song staying in position, one finger per fret. Don't force your way through it all at once, you might end up needing a doctor....just take it bits at a time.

Oh, and one of my coolest chic bass players....Regina, whom I've seen with the band Cowboy Mouth. Very entertaining group if you ever get the chance to see them.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum, but not new to bass! I've been playing for almost 12 years now, with breaks in between!
And everyone loves girls on the bass... it's a nice change to the sweaty beardy boys

Greetings from Germany!

Hey RosieB - Can I get a number?

Chiming in on gender-related issues, I personally haven't experienced any. I'm usually the only female (or maybe 1 of 2 females) among 4 to 5 males. All of the "issues" I've encountered have been more personality related, not gender.

Meaning, any differences are usually instigated by those with a diva (ie, "it's all about ME") attitude, and let me tell you - having a diva attitude is NOT gender specific. I've played with male divas and female divas, and both can be unpleasant experiences.

But again, that's just me chiming in w/ my experience; didn't mean to muddle the conversation.

Some of that may be depending on the age of the people you play with, and some of it where you live. For the most part, I've had positive experiences with finding people to play with and not running into prejudice against women, but now and then I've had potential band mates who couldn't play with a woman because of a jealous wife or girlfriend. It's so stupid, since these same women wouldn't think of telling their husbands/boyfriends they couldn't work with a woman in any other profession.

Yeah if they were teens or early 20's I'd give them a pass. However, the average age of the those with the "diva" attitude that I referred to range from mid-30's to early 50's.

Like you, I personally have had no issues; actually, I LOVE the guys I play with. Sometimes I actually forget about the gender differences because our ultimate goal is to make good Christian/Gospel music. And thankfully there are no jealous spouse issues - it's all good.

I just had my first gig on bass last weekend. It was very fun to stand up and move around while playing - quite a change from performing behind a keyboard!

Thanks! It went really well. The trickiest thing was singing lead while playing bass -- it's still hard to avoid looking down at my hands at this point, but I managed to keep it to a minimum. The songs where I was just backing others went easily. And overall the whole thing was fun!

Welcome to the club, waidada.

Anyone in here played a Gibson Grabber or a Gibson Ripper before and is able to tell me how comfortable they are? There aren't any nearby for me try out.

Haven't had any problems from any of the musicians I play with. Occasional not-nice attitudes from a few folks in other bands, more along the lines of 'this is the boys club what is a woman doing here?' which usually gets smacked down by other guys before I get a chance to respond. Luckily haven't had any problems with anyone hitting on me, perhaps because both I and bandmates are almost all older, and either married or in committed relationships.
