Hi! Sorry it's taken me awhile. Way busy and I can't get on from my ipod anymore. The app won't work right. I think I lost my picture, too. Sigh.

Anyway, new numbers and welcome:

ma4rk, your daughter is adorable. Start her young and send her our way when she gets a bit older! :-)

Thanks RosieB! It's kinda unbelievable that we have so little girls in here (I know some didn't wanted to be a member, but still it's a very small numbers)

Anybody happens to play in church?

Waidada, I used to play in the praise band and a bluegrass gospel group at church. I haven't played for close to 2 years now. But I just started going to church again at a new church with 3 praise bands so maybe I'll start playing again after I've been there a while. And if they need someone.

I play bass and drums in my church. Not at the same time lately I've been alternating from week to week, depending on the availability of other players.

Hi! I'm new - just started playing bass this January. At the ripe 'ol age of 37. I've waited my whole life to play bass but was busy being a single mom. Now she's in college and I have time to play! WHEEEEEEEEEEEE! I'm loving it.

I just joined a band, too (some guys I know who were playing together for fun, two guitarists and a drummer, so I complete the band and get to be the only girl, too - which I like because I've always been "one of the guys". Must be from having 3 brothers!)

Anyway, if this is a chick's club, I'll "join"!

How times have changed

I started playing electric bass at 15, was a card carrying musician's union member at 16. Only one bandleader would hire me (he even told me it was because I was a girl, I'm guessing it could've been because I was a 16 year old girl).

Went to college for jazz performance/music education/double bass, where I was one of two (out of 50 bass majors) female bassists. This was 20 years ago, and how things have changed!

I've played with several orchestras, rock bands, jazz combos, and most people look at you as a musician, not a male/female. It's all about the music after all, right?

Lilgray - that's cool now you can have a lot of time to play! My husband asks me if I am still going to play when I get pregnant, I said of course!! The bass will be right on top of the bump and the baby can hug my bass. (although I think that will be quite a funny scene to have a preggo bassist)

raebasso- did he tell you that because you are a girl that he hired you or that other bands weren't hiring you because u were a girl?

Waidada,
The bandleader said other groups wouldn't hire me because I was a girl. He said that was pretty stupid of them, since I was a much better player than the other players in the area.

I had joined the Musician's Union then specifically to play more, and only one guy hired me.........

Thanks for asking!

Do any of the ladies here play basses with 6 or more strings? I see 4-strings (and short-scales) are quite common, even 5-strings pop up once in a while, but barring one youtube video, I can't say I've ever seen a female bassist schlepping an ERB. Why is this?

Same reason you don't see a lot of women wanking on guitars.

I haven't played one yet, but I've been considering trying some out just to see if I get on with them. I might end up just buying one if all goes well. I mostly play 4 strings, and I'm building a 5 string currently.

I just dropped to visit this thread and saw this post. One of the female bass players at church very handily wields an Ibanez BTB 5-string. I suspect the ratio of 4-string to 5-strings players is constant across genders. Not sure why this matters but had to point out that it does happen.

Do we need to be politically correct? I say no.
I'm playing bass now in my band. I'm the only female. I'm still the lead singer too. We have had fill in bassists now and then, but it seems the crowd likes it better when I play. I'm not as good as the male bassists we've had.

My apologies. I wasn't attempting to be PC at all. I've played with many female bass players and I have seen everything from 4's to 6's.

I guess not, but I like it that way. =P
We shall have more discussion going on though?

Do any of you have small hands? any of you play short scale or med scale?

I know there are a lot of ppl out there (male/female) that don't dig the idea of small hands therefore shortscale, it's all a matter of practicing and stretching it out. I don't agree, I have relativelly small hands and my pinky is sadly short and much weaker than other fingers (photo to prove). My pinky can only reach 4th string, I can't reach any string above without twisting my wrist thus killing my wrist. Even at the 4th string, my pinky is too weak because it's not bended. What's natural to other bassist to spread across 4 frets, it's a task for me because I have to use three fingers for most of the task. I still can't play a scale as quick and fast because of the fact that I have to move my hand back and forth.

I play a short scale now and is a much happier player. I still feel I am limited by the pinky and will never attain the level of
fluid solo etc...

I would say I have small hands. I have always played long scale basses though. I guitars I would have to try a short scale bass but I am pretty comfortable playing a long scale bass. See my picture.
