Glenn's the man. I e-mailed him about Bouree and he wrote right back to me!!! Check it out:
"Hi Glenn,
I grew up listening to my mom's JT records and I have always loved your playing (I used to listen to "This Was", "Stand Up", and "Benefit" constantly)! I absolutely love your tone on "Bouree" and I was curious what type of strings you strung your '69 stock sunburst Precision with for that song (and others). What type of strings do you use now? Sorry for the silly gear questions, but I'd love to know. Thanks a ton for your time and for all the great tunes!!
Sincerely,
Tim T. (aka xsogol)"
Here's his response:
"
Well Tim,
I suspect that the strings on the P Bass were the ones that came on the bass. I have never been particularly string conscious. These days I use any semi roundwounds as I usually play fretless and full rounds do too much damage to a rosewood fretless fingerboard. I don't think I've changed strings on any of my basses in almost 10 years but as I'm not trying to sound like Chris Squire it doesn't seem to matter! I always think that most of the tone comes from the fingers more than the equipment and anyway, as I have 14 basses, I would need to take out a bank loan to change all the strings!
Glenn"
