Good bassists with bad/cheap gear?

Sign in to disble this ad
Since there was a thread dedicated to bad bassists with good/expensive gear, I was interested to see how much of the opposite there was.

I'm fairly good but by no means brilliant, but I have barely spent any money on my rig. I have a bass which which is older than me and was cheap when it was new (Westone Thunderjet) which was donated by a friend and an Aria Pro something-or-other donated by my brother (which I'm planning to do up as it plays better than the thunderjet). My brother also donated me a Trace Elliot 150 watt combo.

Most of the good Rolling Stones tracks were cut with Bill Wyman playing his weird homemade fretless bass.

Dave "Dixie" Collins, one of the best known sludge/stoner bassists in the genre (Buzzov*en, Hail!Hornet, Weedeater, Bongzilla, etc) plays through an old solid state Sunn rig with a Squier P-Bass that has strings on it that are rusted through and he lays down some incredible groove.

David Wm. Sims of Scratch Acid and Jesus Lizard (among others) plays an old Memphis Jazz bass copy most of the time. He's recorded a bunch of albums and toured the world with it. Stock aside from the bridge he replaced after owning it for several years.

The bass player from Big Business (who also played with Melvins for a time) plays a Squier Jazz.

The bass player from The Sword plays a Squier CV 50s pretty often.

Fat Mike from NOFX is a staunch supporter of cheap basses.
