Good Fretless Bass Players

Jaco Pastorius showed everybody how to do it.

After that, I would say that Pino Palladino and Tony Levin come to mind.

I am sure other people know tons of good fretless players...

Freebo- on Bonnie Raitt's earliest recordings from ca. 1973 on to about 1980. Perfect fretless because he doesn't always sound like he's playing fretless. His intonation is in control so you only know it's fretless because of the tone and when he wants to play in-between tones.

Rick Danko- with The Band.

Boz Burrell with Bad Company.

Plus the usual suspects of Jaco, Pino, Mannring, Willis, and Mick Karn.

John

I believe Jeff Ament (Pearl Jam) also uses a fretless.

Not sure if his style suits your demand, though.

Karn was absolutely amazing. I was so sad to hear about his passing recently.

If you can find a copy of "Waking Hour" by Dali's Car (basically, Karn with Peter Murphy), get it... and if you're a fretless player try to figure out how to play the song "His Box." I guarantee that will keep you busy for a good long while.

+1 on Jeff Ament. I think he used fretless a good bit on Ten.
