There's a thread over in Recordings called "I want Jazz" or somesuch, that more or less asks the same questions - you might like to take a look.

Scott Pazera-No Joke, you can listen and check out this Cd at his site www.scottpazera.com, Local Bassist that fronts his own trio, and he also studied with Bill Dickens the Buddaha of the bass! Studing with Scott right now!

Is the jazz you are looking for dependent upon the type of bass being played (i.e., electric or upright)?

If you're looking for great bass playing (as opposed to simply great jazz), here's what I can recommend for upright:

Bill Evans Trio, Village Vanguard Sessions
Ron Carter and Jim Hall, Live At The Village West
Charles Mingus, Blues And Roots

For electric--just get Jaco's first disc.
