Check out the DVD or CD of "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" - that should do it.

+1........... You definitely can't go wrong with that...It's pretty much Jamerson's greatest hits.Still, there a lot of stuff from the mid-late 70s that killed as well. Marvin Gaye's last few albums like "I Want You", "Here, My Dear" and "In Our Lifetime" are all albums where cats like Chuck Rainey, Frank Blair and Wilton Felder (from the crusaders) kick ass. It's what the 70's sound was all about. Marvin in his prime....Stevie Wonder's left hand is also amazing! All the Moog stuff he was doing was ridiculous. Check out "Music Of My MIND", Fullfillingness' First Finale" , "Songs In The Key of Life" (also featuring Nate Watts), and The Secret Life Of Plants" album. it's all good stuff in there......Enjoy........

If you're digging Motown, do NOT forget to check out Stax! The two styles go hand in hand and your playing skills will increase tenfold by studying both studios.

This is what you want. I consider it a required purchase for any bass player:

Hitsville USA: The Motown Singles Collection 1959-1971

Plenty of great replies.

I also like "What becomes of the Broken Hearted," and "Sir Duke."

To the OP, try to get the DVD production of SITSOM. Try not to cry at the end...

Beat me to it on that collection- it's got to be about the best collection I've seen.

Here's a site I posted awhile ago that has a few Motown songs with the basslines solo'd:

http://www.ricksuchow.com/music-group-151.html

These are Jamerson's original tracks, not someone covering them. Cool stuff!

My favorites are Bernadette(Bob Babbitt does a good job of it on the SITSOM CD)and both versions of Heard it through the Grapevine, for what it's worth.

Bob

Marvin Gaye's "Innercity Blues (Makes me wanna holler)"
I love it. Bob Babbitt on the bass.

You absolutely need to watch Standing in the shadows of Motown. Great stuff.

And get some Stax records too.

I love "For Once In My Life" by Stevie. That bassline is sick.

It's a Shame, I Want You Back, Ain't No Mountain...so many hits it's insane.

Also, while not necessarily Motown, I highly recommend checking out People Get Ready: Curtis Mayfield story boxed set:

http://www.amazon.com/People-Get-Rea...1507631&sr=1-8

Tons of great stuff, and definitely a little "heavier" and more raw than the Motown stuff.

SITSOM is on for $6 at a local store...I've been buying them up and handing them out to friends. IMO Motown is the greatest music ever! Saw the Funk Bros live a few months ago and it was AWESOME
