Hmm, interesting. I loved andy's playing, but woody's tone was to kill for.

From Jambands.com :
Jorgen Carlsson has replaced Andy Hess as Gov’t Mule’s permanent bassist. Hess privately announced his resignation earlier this year, and Gov’t Mule has spent the past six months quietly rehearsing, jamming and hanging with Carlsson. Hess officially joined Gov’t Mule in 2003, three years after the death of founding bassist Allen Woody.
“We were faced with the daunting task of replacing a one-of-a-kind musician, which I'm sure was intimidating for Andy, who did a wonderful job and brought his own personality into the music,” Gov’t Mule leader Warren Haynes said in a statement. “Jorgen’s style is somewhere between Woody's and Andy's. He brings some of Woody's aggressive spirit back although he is very much his own man. Having worked with Jorgen over the last several months, we are very excited to explore some new directions while at the same time going back a little closer to our roots.” Carlsson was born in Sweden and has worked as a session musician and studio owner since arriving in the United States in 1991. As previously reported, Gov’t Mule will kick off its Kinder Revolution tour at Burlington, VT’s Flynn Theatre on October 30. The quartet will also release a new DVD entitled The Tale of Two Cities, which features two complete shows drawn from Hess’ time with the band.

Jörgen Karlsson was also in a band called Low Millions, some of the other stuff that I have heard from Jörgen Karlsson, sounds a little like Squarepusher. Definitely is a great solid and creative bassist, best of luck to him with Mule.

Ya, their singer was in Montreal for a bit. (He's actually Leonard Cohen's son!)

That sounds interesting! I trust Warren's judgement, one of my favorite musicians who hasn't let me down yet. [Except maybe letting Mike Gordon direct Rising Low. ]

+1 I saw Gov't Mule recently. I couldn't wait for a bass solo but it never came. That was a big disappointment -- but my only disappointment. Those guys are really good. The bass didn't sound so good in this particular venue (Harrisburg, PA). I wonder if that was a factor in not having a bass solo.

I much prefer the "original" mule.
No disrespect to Andy, he did a great job. If I never heard the mule with Woody, I wouldn't know what I was missing. The vibe that Haynes, Woody and Abts had was truly amazing. Talk about a pocket!
I read that the idea was for Mule to 'evolve' over time, adding members, changing the overall sound, etc.
Once Woody died, that change came quickly with the keys and Andy's style. It just didn't grab me anymore.

Anyway, I welcome the change, and can't wait to find out what Andy does next too! He is great, and wherever he lands, it should be another great band to listen to!

I remember catching Allman Bros shows and watching Woody play in the early nineties. The guy would be in a zone and just lay down the coolest stuff. Smooth fingerstyle, edgy with a pick, 12 string + and fretless basses. The "Just a little help from our friends" live Gov't Mule recording from 1998 has remarkable bass playing by Allen. I miss that dudes stuff.

Looking forward to hear what the new bassist brings to the table in Mule.

I'm not a big Govt. Mule fan, but Andy Hess sounded great to me. I think this was more about personality or maybe Hess getting some other offers than a purely musical move.

andy hess? from jambands.com:
(this sounds like it would be excellant!)

Earlier this year, guitarist Will Bernard entered a Pennsylvania recording studio with three notable players. Bernard was joined by John Medeski, Stanton Moore and Andy Hess for these sessions at Maggie's Farm in Buck's County, PA. The resulting project is set for a September 30 release on Palmetto Records. Blue Plate Special collects twelve tracks drawn from the Maggie's Farm sessions, which were produced by guitarist Matt Balitsaris. It doesn't appear that the four musicians who appear on Blue Plate Special will gig together in the immediate future, although Bernard will support the release with a number of October dates, featuring his current touring band, starting on October 1 at the Chicago House of Blues.

Sounds like an interesting album!

Sorry for the zombie thread, but I figure this is the best place for the little tidbit I have to share. Canadian guitarist Gordie Johnson wrote a musical tribute to Woody after his passing. The song is 'Nashville Grass' by Big Sugar. I can't find a youtube video but it's track 2 on this album
