Great Bassists Who Ruin Songs By Singing

Sign in to disble this ad
To clarify, I'm referring to awesome bass players known for their instrumental prowess who at some point decided it was a good idea to sing on some tracks and should stick to bass playing.

Two examples that come to mind:

Victor Wooten on his solo material and to a lesser extent with Bela Fleck. Total cheese and cliche whenever he (or they) decide to exercise their vocal chords. Example: "Communication". A great catchy track with cliched unnecessary lyrics.

The "crown jewel" for me would be Stu Hamm on "The Urge" (album). Bleck! Ruins the album.

Yeah I know "if you don't like it don't listen to it" but I'm not paying $15 to hear a great instrumentalist exercise his pop star fantasies.

Any other names come to mind?

They ain't bassists but their instrumentalists....
Snatch, vai and yngwie do horrible vocals. Dream theater has awesome music but bad lyrics and annoying singing. [I still listen to them for the uber on steroids musicianship]

A theory that I've had for a while and was really hit home when I bought victor wootens second solo album. That the best instrumentalists are generaly the worst singer/song writers and vice versa

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Dave Matthews sings on "Communication."

Also, Les Claypool is a terrible singer.

Does he really? Man that's even worse... I'm thinking about the lyrics more so than the vocal quality. Just ruins the track for me.

I'll agree and disagree with Claypool. Horrible singer but its fits the quirkiness of the music.

I think it's vic's brother future man singing on that one with Dave M. singing the bridge.

He's not a bassist - but I've never been a fan of Jeff Beck's vocal attempts. The worst singing I ever heard was "Hippie Hat".

Stanley Clarke used to butcher some songs with his vocals back in the day.

I loved The Urge! Stu laid down some great vocals, just listen to "Who do you want me to be today?". Amazing album!

Claypool can't sing at all, but no good voice would work with Primus.

I love Geddy's vox.

If bassists don't sing, they'll turn invisible!
Well, on stage at least

I didn't think Vic did so badly, even after seeing his show. He's not stellar, but he can hold a tune. IMO, Marcus Miller and Sting are also in that category.

I'm thinking more along the lines of bass players who are known to only play instrumental material and then decide to "branch out" into singing. Its a combination of mediocre vocal ability and bad lyrics that get me the most.

Let's be nice to Geddy! It's a love or hate kind of thing with him.

Yeah, HUGE Rush fan here.

...Although I have seen some live clips where he should NOT have been singing. One of Bastille Day in particular on YouTube that someone here posted fairly recently. It hurts my ears a little.

I've seen them live a few times, and always thought his voice was excellent.
