The Great Greg Reeves: Mystery Man

Sign in to disble this ad
Greg Reeves. Was he 12 when he became a session player at Motown? 15 when he joined Crosby Stills Nash and Young? What is his real name? Where are the three solo albums he was working on? Where has he been for the last twenty years? So many questions. No one knows what happened to this man. He played on "Cloud Nine" by the Temptations, the "Deja Vu" album of CSNY, "Southern Man" by Neil Young, and last but not least on "Immigration Man" by Crosby/Nash. Go to the Itunes store and listen to the first 30 seconds of "Immigration Man". That represents some of his best work, I think. Pretty amazing. I met him in April of 1970. He had written some very charming songs and was working on a solo album, Neil Young producing. Three years later he was working with Larry Curzon on another solo album. In the early 90's another try. After that, what? Disappointment? Drugs? Became a farmer? No one seems to know.

Update: Reeves not on Cloud Nine

I just got an email from Dennis Coffey, who played guitar on the Cloud Nine sessions. He stated strongly that Jamerson played bass on those sessions and he knew nothing about Greg Reeves. Graham Nash confirms that Greg did play on "Immigration Man".

Calvin "Fuzzy" Samuels was with the live show from that era. I think he was from Jamaica

Greg Reeves: Youngest Musician to Play Woodstock?

According to official records, Gregory Alan Reeves was born April 8, 1956. That means he was only 13 years old when he played with CSN&Y at Woodstock. Although some suspected that he had faked his age at the time and was younger than his claimed 19 years, few, I think, would have imagined that Greg was so young.

Great question. I hope this one stays alive long enough to get some information. He does seem to have dropped out of the business rather quickly. Wiki has nothing on him, other than what is listed above. Surely, someone will know more about him.

Yes, Born in 1956

Not only have I seen several official documents giving the 4-8-56 birth date, Greg himself gave 1956 as his birth date when he copyrighted several of his songs in 1991. It is difficult to dispute at this point. I am astonished - having met and worked with him around the time of his birthday ( he told me the project was a birthday present from CSNY) in early April of 1970. I thought he was young, but not that young.

I've wondered about this myself for a long time. Certainly a great player.

I think Mr. Reeves is working again. I just ran a quick search for him on twitter and found this: http://www.twitter.com/los_demones

Rumour is that Greg was fired after Stills discovered he was practicing black magic backstage, casting spells towards Steve before shows. Crazy stuff for sure.......but it seems the mystery man himself could be trolling....
