Great Seven String Players?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was reading some thread over at the Basses Forum (I think it was the Newbie thread about what makes a six better than a five?) and I saw a somewhat brief discussion about Seven String Basses.
I also read that people pick them up and tend to sound clumsy on them.
So, I'm wondering who some great Bassists who play seven strings are and what they sound like? Ones who don't sound "clumsy".
To be honest, I'm interested in learning to play one later down the road after seeing a Bass cover of Bury the Living by Brain Drill. It was... Stunning. The guy who did the cover was really good, and he was tapping on it like there was no tomorrow.

He doesn't get much notice because he is a Christian musician, but Norm Stockton is awesome on his 7 string MTDs

Norm's a BEAST! He's the main reason I play a 7, actually. Bill "Buddah" Dickens is another one. Adam Nitti's great on it too.

I'm finding myself playing the 7 almost all the time now. The only thing I really struggle with is slapping on it. The spacing is really narrow, which makes it very hard to be accurate with the thumb and then the narrow spacing makes it hard to get under the strings for popping as well. Then all those strings make muting a nightmare so you end up with lots of unwanted tones... Aside from slapping and the occasional fretless tune though, the 7 is my main instrument now.

Eric Czar composes some absolutely amazing 7-string pieces. His compositions are great and his intonation on the fretless are bloody amazing.

Also, Ives Carbonne is amazing, but I don't think I've ever seen him play only 7 strings.

I just saw Daniele playing with Vardan last night in Boston. Two of my favorite musicians and people. Glad you dug it!

There are actually a lot more 7 string bass players than most people think, especially in the technical death metal scene

Jeff Hughell formerly with Brain Drill
Braindrill - Jeff Hughell - Conklin 7 string bass - Bury the Living - YouTube

Danny Hauser from Veil of Maya
7 string bass Mowgli sweepie riff-Veil of maya - YouTube
7 string bass tapping Haydn's sonata - YouTube

Just to name a few. I've actually been thinking about picking up a used GT7, I love extended range.

Thanks! Now I have some players to watch and listen to. I've always liked the thought of a seven string bass since I've heard about them, but I've never actually wanted to learn to play one well until that Brain Drill cover.

Jeroen Paul Thesseling (Obscura (formerly), pestilence and several other acts) has recently perked my ears up to 7 string Fretless. He's a MONSTER.

Melvin is a true virtuoso, IMHO!
