I don't know if you would call Jack Bruce groovy, but he's definitely busy. Geddy Lee and Entwistle also come to mind.

If you want to break out of the r-5-8 pattern, it helps to know the theory behind walking bass lines.

He's not really rock, but if you want groovy and busy, Jerry Jemmott is the man.

The thing with r-5-8s is that it may not be your issue. If your guitarists are just playing power chords, and refusing to define the 3rds, it might be all you can do really.

The thing is, you don't need to study crazy theory or develop intricate techniques. The notes are all ready there on your bass! Next time you're jamming, try playing some of them. They probably won't sound very good, or at least, they won't sound better than a root or a 5th in a given place.

I think you'll find after studying a lot of the above bassists that:
-they have bands that allow them to have 'advanced' bass formations
-More busyness comes from tight and different rhythms than from actual other pitches.

Check out Tracy Wormworth's 'Christmas Wrapping' - Bass Player, Scott Lafaro issue has the full transcription, by the way...

And it is not really "rockin" - but man, does it ROCK and GROOVE!!!

Chuck Rainey's "Peg" (Steely Dan) and "Rock Steady" (Aretha) both rock and groove and are 'busy' but in such a subtle way you hardly notice they're as busy as they are - that is until you try to learn and play them... whoa...

I didn't think much of Stuart Zender's basslines until I found myself in a band that covers some Jamiroquai tunes. That dude has a lot going on in his basslines, and much of it is chordal.

Also, check out Nathan Watts playing for Stevie Wonder. Once again, there's much more happening with that cat than meets the eye.

Yeah, and his take is pretty different depending on his surrounding (a good thing). His Peacemakers stuff is largely groovy-fusiony-funk six string with lots of bass solos. Tasty ones. He digs in a lot more on the Allman Brothers recordings that he is on. The Aquarium Rescue Unit stuff was sort of tune-by-tune.

One of my favorite players.

not nit-picking, are you looking for "buzy" as in bassists who use fuzz, or "busy" as in play a lot of notes?
