I had no idea he was a bassist, but what a badass.

I heard he tried making it in punk when he first started but couldn't, so he tried country and he did make it there.

Anyways.
yeah, just thought I'd share.

Hank III is one of my absolute favorites. He's basically been ostracized from the Country scene because he's vulgar, self-destructive, and very much enjoys his status as a true "redneck".

He runs with some of the best bluegrass pickers I've ever heard when he's doing his country thing. Great, great stuff, although I'm not a fan of his punk/metal band.

Great musician. I got to see him on bass when Superjoint Ritual came to town. This was several years ago - 2003? It was madness.

Hmm, I kinda like it!

This is some hardcore stuff!

I'm not much of a fan of pop country stuff. However I do use it for retraining myself to simplify my bass parts and groove rather than play out when there is a lack of ... well, interesting music going on.

Joe Buck used to play bass for Hank III. He's solo now... Joe Buck Yourself is his motto.

Hank III plays here in Nashville every once in awhile at Layla's and Robert's.

i have 2 of his country albums, much more like his grandfather than his dad in terms of sound and feel...he had one of the best steel guitar players around on one of his albums

the shows i've known about, he does his country act first, then the second act is his hardcore stuff--it gives the more 'traditional crowd' a chance to enjoy the county act then get out of there

Actually that sounds like most older country artists, ei) Johnny Cash, David Allen Coe, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, George Jones. I could go on!

in interviews Hank III has stated that he always resisted playing country because of his heritage, and the fact that he hates Nashville - and apparently, didn't get on too well with Hank II.

he says it was child support payments that caused him to do it in the end - how much more country could you get?

i like him.

I'm probably the biggest Hank III fan here.

You guys nailed it as far as his country stuff goes: he hates modern country music because they're all pretty boys and making garbage music. Country used to be outlaws, drunks, and well.....rednecks.

His hardcore band is called Assjack, he plays guitar on it.

Go to youtube and watch some live stuff with Superjoint. The dude does nothing but headbang like a madman while playing bass and SJR isn't exactly easy to play, they have a lot of weird stops and tempos. I've played a few covers and I try to go at it like he does and typically just get dizzy from windmilling.

I got to see him perform in Orlando last year. Just a great show, and probably the most eclectic group of concert goers I've ever witnessed. There were grease-heads, rednecks, cowboy hats, punks and stoners. It was wild.

his live work is magical -- worth the price of a ticket.

=====

I respect that he holds reverance for gramps...while still not doing some hokey branson show.

Shelton is really a drummer (if you have to ask who that is then you don't need to write about him). teh "he couldn't make it" line is not the case, he is accomplished in many different genres, bands, and styles. A heck of a muscician for sure.
