Its a shame that he seemed to be a point of contention here. I'm not saying who was at fault for what was said or who said it, I'm just saying that its sad that he was at the center of it, considering that he gave a different position on his ideas of music and education. Regardless of whether you agreed with him or not, they were usually informative, if not entertaining.

Happy Birthday Jeff.

Yea, I don't get the Jeff Berlin bashing either. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. And as good as he is and as long as he's been playing, it would seem to me that his opinion should carry more weight than someone that only occasionally gigs, or the throng of bedroom players that violently disagree with him. I don't like everything he says either, but given his pedigree, I listen to what he has to say instead of brushing him off.

Sorry for not being "in the know" but what was it Jeff said (or did) that started the bashing in the first place??

I have nothing but the utmost respect for the man. As said here, we may not agree with everything he has to say, but isn't that true about pretty much anybody? Anyway, happy birthday, Jeff.

+1 - Having met him and seen him play a few times......I believe he stands as a man that's true to himself, and his art. Whether one agrees on all counts with him is not of a consequence to he or me. He comes off as an concerned individual dedicated (on several levels) to making his corner of the world a better place. That's how many of us would like remembered, as we're all just passing through this life, and attempting to leave it a little better and brighter. I, for one, wish him and his good health and fortune

Happy Birthday, Jeff. I used to run into you at the grocery store on a regular basis (Sweetbay). Hope to see you soon when I get back down there.

he used to write columns for bp mag in the 80's where he said that the most efficient path to musical awareness is through a strictly academic path using jazz, and anything else was crap education that you could learn just as easily by listening to records. he's gotten a lot of folks mad at him because he can be very dismissive of other opinions, but he is right that musical education is often very dumbed down, and a lot of schools have classes that are a waste of money.

Best birthday wishes, Jeff. As with others, I haven't always agreed with everything you said (though there was a lot I DID agree with) but it gave me lots of food for thought.

Back in the early 80s, I had the pleasure of seeing a lineup of the group I.O.U. consisiting of Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Berlin, and Chad Wackerman. It was a very small up close and personal club in Pittsburgh, PA called The Decade. I was so impressed and blown away by the talent of the band and Jeff's playing that I felt like I did not know how to play well at all. I have had the utmost respect for Jeff as a bassist ever since. Happy Birthday Jeff!
