On this 60th anniversary of his birth, I feel so privileged to have known Jaco. I'll never forget hanging out with him in his living room, Jaco wearing nothing but a torn pair of cutoffs, showing me the fingerings to "Teen Town," telling Weather Report stories and so much more. One month later, he was gone. R.I.P., my friend. Anyone else have a good Jaco story? Please share! Jaco Pastorius |

EDIT: i forgot my cool Jaco story...
well, when i was a beginner, i was blessed to see him play in a small Frisco club. i stood 10' away and watched the then barely known bassist do an unforgettable performance, including his rendition of "Purple Haze"!!!

| | | | Happy birthday Jaco! It's a tremendously beautiful Florida day for a celebration of Jaco's life. After all, the Ft. Lauderdale area is the place where he got to start his stunning life of music! I hope the Pastorius family is living it up and celebrating this day
He lives on!

I went to his park and grave down here in Florida for my birthday last April.

I'm honored to have known you in this lifetime-the encounters over the years were inspirational, amazing, intimidating and sometimes sad. RIP, Ingrid! This is for both of them. I saw a set of a "Jaco Pastorius Big Band" show a couple weeks ago at the Blue Note in Tokyo. The shows were a celebration of what would have been his 60th birthday.
Richard Bona and Damien Erskine were the "featured" bassists of the show.
Undoubtedly, the show featured great bass playing, but beyond that, the music was immortal!
It must be a testament to Jaco's popularity, but normally the Tokyo Blue Note crowd is really reserved, but they were really getting into it in this gig. |
