Can anyone recommend some outstanding bassists from the hard rock/heavy metal idiom? Preferably new(from the 2000's),and plays melodic music. I know there are bassist like alex webster or Dan Briggs that are outstanding bassists but the music is just not my cup of tea. Are there any modern bassist out there that plays interesting basslines (hard rock/metal)? It seems to me busy basslines exist in the old days like Geddy , Entwistle era. Or did I just don't know them yet? |

| | | | Thanks guys for the suggestions, plz keep them coming. By melodic I mean nice riff n singing "melodic" vocals. I find it hard to express, hope u know what i mean. I'm not a fan of death grunt vocals, but I like hard rock/metal. |

Also, some of Portal's songs, spin off of cynic with Kris Kringel (sp?) on bass, have great lines.

Let's see, Martin Mendez from Opeth writes some great lines as does Jack Gibson with Exodus. Some other guys i like are Jeroen Paul Thesseling of Obscura, D.D. Verni of Overkill, Rex Brown of Pantera, and Jean-Michel Labadie of Gojira. I know all of those bands aren't new, but they've all had albums out in the past two or three years. |

| | | Jeff Caxide from ISIS is what you are looking for.
Yes, there is some cookie monster/growling but if you start with their Panopticon, In the Absence of Truth, and Wavering Radiant CDs it's not too much to deal with.
Of course then you can go backwards and get the amazing Oceanic and Celestial CDs

The guy handling bass duties on the "Sick" album released last year is stunning ! He is very up-front in the mix - probably because he`s the best musician in the band lol ! He has a very fat tone, and his playing is the best I`ve heard come along in the rock genre in a loooong time. Highly highly recommended - I picked the CD up @ Walmart for $10.

He ONLY plays fretless 6 string bass. The music is technical, but his lines are more jazz/fusion than metal. The biggest plus is he is very noticeable in the mix, not drowned out by the guitars. |

Just listen to his solo on the beginning of Orbital Elements.
