Haslip on a Roscoe LG 6er

This may not be news here....

Saw the Jackets in St. Pete Sat. nite...Jimmy was on what looked like an LG 3006 with offset HB's all nite. He monitored though an SWR Head and a 210 and 410 then through a PA...(leaving the Korg rack tuner on distracting strobe the whole 2 hours). Sounded perfect as would be anticipated. He had extended dialogue with Baylor on solos which appeared physically impossible...what a creative machine, he is still evolving. He was at the bar before the show and I walked up and said "Sir...just being this close to your mojo is life threatening...." He laughed and talked a bit, signed my ticket, etc.

Last time I was able to see him was 8 years ago, then a few before that...he was still playing a Tobias then.

If they come around in a small club dont miss him, he's on fire.

Yeah, I think he's been a Tobias & Roscoe player for many years.

That was my annoying korg tuner! The rig was a SWR SM900 and (2) Avatar 210 Kappa Pro cabs. I ended up providing backline for them for the St Pete and Cocoa shows.

He's been using an LG six-string for a long while now- apparently he's really big in Japan, so the majority of LG six-string orders (which isn't many, as it's not a body designed for six strings) go out there.

I've seen him 3 times over the last few years. Great player, nice guy - as are all the Jackets. He even did a request for me when they were in Minneapolis a couple summers ago. I emailed him that we were driving 5 hours one way to see them. My now wife then girlfriend and I took our first weekend away to see them the year before. I said it would be really cool to hear them do "Motet" which is my favorite tune and features bass all over it. He emaild back he'd see what he could do.

We were at the gig a couple days later, and sure enough, the 3rd tune was Motet. The bass solo was very extended and incredible. I talked to him after the gig, mentioned my name and he said - oh yeah, you drove all that way - and we did Motet! I thanked him, we took a picture and I was again amazed at how personable and down to earth these guys are.

DWBass-
Jimmy was quite happy with the rig I provided for him. Though we didn't get into nitty gritty specifics about the Avatars, he really dug them. Dwayne "Smitty" Smith played on the same rig and was blown away with the sound. Avatars are great speaker cabs, I guess some people just like to pay lots of money for their gear to have a certain name. Me, I am a working player and can't afford to pay 3-4x's more for something of equal or lesser quality.

Manbass-
Thanks for the support! You should definately come introduce yourself! Have we met before?
I am not mixing the Jazzfest this year. It's been a while since I've done it. I started working for the Artists' instead of the sound company. I wish I could, since most of the Front of House sound guys in the area really don't have a clue how to mix jazz.

The Yellowjackets are a class act all the way! Super cool guys, really down to earth, and top notch players.
I can't believe the state of music now days when a group of that caliber is playing small clubs! Sad! I guess thats why most Jazz acts end up overseas.

I agree. I'm an avid Avatar cab owner/user!

Its seems they (YJ) dig the small clubs as well as the Performing Arts Centers...They live at Yoshi's in SF 2 weeks a year since the 90's. I dont see how they broke even for that show in St. Pete at average $30 a head and maybe 150 packed out tightly. If its agift...I'll take it....they should have charged more for the intimacy of proximity alone IMO.
Later.

I was really disappointed that I missed the Yellowjackets in 2004- they were playing at a VERY small stageless restaurant/jazz club in Cleveland when I lived out there and I didn't make it down to the show. I'd seen Michael Manring play there a month or two before and was able to sit six feet away from him.

I love seeing great shows in a small venue. I just figured a group of that caliber would have a better draw. The next night was only 120 or so people. Glad I'm not a promoter!

SteveC...yes...I read your thread about your Haslip encounter and the "Motet" request....nice experience, thanks for sharing it.
So many of us start threads being star struck when we meet an idol or some player/group we have followed all our lives (it seems), and there are many "Legendary" players I wish I had never approached due to their attitude.

What I think is worthy of all my gushing over Haslip is that he and Russ Ferrante both display a knowledge of and genuine appreciation for the everyday guy like me who intimately live with their massive body of work. (Maybe I should start a "Pro Encounter" thread for that.) In contrast to Pat Metheny, who's body of work I practically worship, has stated many times, mostly subtley, (sp?), that he could not care less whether listeners or critics "get" his music, he plays his thought pattern for its own evolution....if we happen to enjoy it, or he just happens to win a Grammy for it, thats above and beyond his purpose. I'm not saying Pats not worthy of Praise, I think he'd be a tough guy to converse with on how we do "get" his music. Thats my take on why Jimmy is worthy of gushing FWIW.
