Muted, ghosted, ringing notes over another, finger funk, octaves, hammer ons,etc, etc, James Jamerson. Grand father of funk bass (in the context of Motown pop but funk nonetheless)

Y'all notice in the clip that Jerry has no pickguard on his jazz bass long before anyone had heard of Jaco.

more disco then funk, but CHIC has some busy bass lines
or check out the "acid jazz" stuff from artists like:incognito and jameriquai

Not that he couldn't do it...
But it's certainly not what he's known for.
I saw them a couple times, and believe me, Funk was the last thing going on in those shows.
