I have been unable to find a club for bassists in the 808 state thus far, sooooo, I figured I'd pop one up.

If one exists already, totally feel free to ignore me.. otherwise, I hereby claim the first number.

If you'd like a number, post away or send me a PM and I'll update as I get word.

Actually, I think that the membership rules should follow the local custom of accepting anything with any ties to the islands, so here we go.

You can have a number if you meet any one of these criteria:

1) If you are in Hawaii as a bassist
2) You were in Hawaii previously as a bassist
3) You were ever in Hawaii previously (for anything more than a vacation) and are now a bassist
4) You ever performed in Hawaii as a bassist
5) You own an instrument, amp, strings, or anything bass-related which was made in, purchased in, designed in, or has a picture of Hawaii on it

So yea, pretty easy to get in.

That being said, Stickk and GBassNorth both get numbers.

And now for the obligatory pic of an ultra rare graphite acoustic bass custom made for, owned and played by John Entwistle in the late 90's then aquired from John by bass player Jimmy Haslip about a year later and then aquired by me from Jimmy a couple years ago:

Beautiful bass, mint condition, still has the original gold strings on it along with a spare set that John had put in the case. The Rainsong Company estimates that less than 10 acoustic electric basses total were made by the company before they discontinued production on them (mfg cost too high). This was the only custom bass made by the company and is adorned with a Hula Girl inlay headstock.
PS - yes, I've been to Hawaii (Maui) a few times and would love to live there some day.

Gail Swanson, a singer/songwriter I work with was endorsed by Rainsong when they were based on Maui, her guitars were sweet!

+1 on that. The best 12 string acoustic guitar I ever heard was made by Rainsong. If you're gonna play acoustic and you'll be outside (vs in an air conditioned pub) it's the only way to go. I don't play my Rainsong bass, strictly a collector piece but I wish they still made them. Guess I'll have to keep my eye open for one of the other 9 basses they made.

Saw/heard Jaco in a lounge band, Oahu c.1972. "The Days of Wine Coolers and Leighs". A tropical soul vaccination! I've lived in the Islands, so yes. I do qualify.

Can I join?

1) went to Kalani High School and learned to play bass there.

2) Used to hang with Seawind (late 80's) before they moved
to LA.

3) My folks still live there.

4) I live in the Bay Area now and wear Aloha Shirts & some times Scott's sandals to most of my blues or jazz gigs.

5) Here's recent video live Blues jam at the Little Fox Theater with my Aloha shirt & slippers. Andy ( the drummer is the
editor for Drum World) & Freddie is an obscure pedal steel
blues player from the 60's.

Freddie! I wore out, and then lost my vinyl copy of "Sweet Funky Steel". Produced by Harvey Mandel with TOP's (then) bassist Victor Conte. Mr. Roulette is such a gentleman, and a true survivor of the blues.

Very nice work Dennis, guess you must know a thing or three about the sound in the ground in Hawaii!

Just a bit:
used to see C&K at small bar in Waikiki.
go to high school with the late Mackey Feary.
see Kalapana at the Illikai when they were big.
went to first Crater Festival.
trying remember what else??

Did not know Jaco was in Hawaii in '72!!
I was still living there.
I lent him my amp for gig here in '86. and tried out his bass too.

Anyways back to the Freddie:
It was being at right place at right time. Totally unexpected.
as we were jammin' earlier just before that with full band.

and Vince the jam master ask both Andy & I stay on the
stage and play with Freddie.
Which is rare -
It 's the usual jammer line up: 2 guitars, keys, vocal ,drums & bass.

Of course we said ok. and I did not know that Deb- (she
like to videotape everything.) had taped it and saw posted
the next day.

What we missed: that Dolly who plays soprano sax decided not sit in with this
group.
If she would sat in with whole group- we probably would have done
as 4 pc-

Which would sounded even cool: more unearthy blues..

She played later with a different group during the night.

Freddie often sits in at different clubs around here.
He's not really talker-more quiet side.
Usually at the other jams- the jam master have me often sit in with him.
as I really keep my volume way down & keep my playing to bare minimum to
to highlight his playing.
It easy to over power him as he does not play too loud on stage.

I think that album is available as Japanese import cd- I 've
seen it at Amoeba store in SF. not cheap $25 ?

Small world- I used to study with Victor in late 70's after
he quite TOP. He was quite nice guy despite what the media
says about him after BALCO case. Did not know he was on the
Lp and he never talked about it either.
