HEADHUNTERS W/ George Porter

Sign in to disble this ad
I caught the headhunters last night at a small club in the D with George Porter on bass. He was playing his 66? Precision thru an SVT. Great show and Mike Clarke (drummer) is sick. He is as good a drummer as I've seen live and considering I've seen Tony Williams, Jack Dejohnet, Lenny White, Dennis Chambers and Dave Weckl that is quite a compliment. Very cool show, hard to keep the butt on the seat in that one. I can't wait to see them again with Paul Jackson. Porter was great, but I have a feeling Jackson's J wouldn't get as blurry in the mix as Porters old P bass did. Also our beloved Ryan Godote (LDS) tore it up with the opening act!

For the record, Mr. Jackson plays a custom shop ESP bass..

I caught these guys on 2 consecutive nights in Chicago last year (with Paul), and aside from the reedists being pretty lame (Bennie Maupin is sooo missed), the band was freakin' fantastic.

I love GP Jr., but i can't imagine seeing them w/o Paul.. maybe it's just too expensive to get here from Japan for the type of tour they were doing?

By the way, which club in the D?

I agree about Mike Clarke, one of my favorite funky drummers who also can swing their ass off. In the early days of the Headhunters Paul Jackson played a P-bass, probably just a better fit for those guys.

They were at Magic Bag out in Ferndale Mi. It's a pretty good room and the headlinners usually get mixed well.

True re: the P-Bass.. he also played a natural Telecaster bass for a while too, as seen of the cover of 'Black Octopus', and the back cover of 'Straight from the Gate'..

I've heard of, and have heard good things about the Magic Bag.. Do you know about the Bohemian National Home (which i believe is on Tillman)? I've got some good friends, Bridge 61 (kind of a combo platter of 'new thing'-era Blue Note stuff, and early '70s Miles Davis electricity.), playing there this week, on the 28th.. great bass player, and would be well worth your time!

It's really sad to me that Detroit doesn't seem to get a decent share of jazz folks coming through town, considering it has one of the richest histories, jazz and (obviously) otherwise...

Wish I would have been in town to see that show. I saw George with the Meters at Tramp's in NY a number of years ago, and it was something!

+1!! Mike Clarke is amazing on all fronts. I even got to see him play with Brand X years ago, not only did he lay down the funk but also hit nearly odd-meter known to man!

I have alot of respect for GP Jr. But Paul Jackson and Mike Clarke are perfect together. There styles fit together so nicely. I'm sure it was a great show though. I hope to catch a show in the future.
