Who else likes this guy's playing? It's solid stuff. It's an accomplishment that he can keep up with some of their crazy intricate guitar lines and play them tightly. When given a chance to play a solo or get in some nice fills he does some pretty cool stuff (including the occasional slap solo that seems to come out of nowhere but fits with the track). He's also given a pretty good sound in the mix so the bass lines are clear and stand out on their own, which seems to be fairly rare for power metal which tends to be dominated by the guitar lines and the constant double-bass. Any thoughts on this guy's playing?

I love his playing, he goes from fingers to picks, taps and slaps every now and then.

That would definitely explain some of the tone variations. I really appreciate players like that who are versatile enough to switch around between various techniques, rather than insisting that there is one technique that works best.
