Help with a Gene Simmons quote

Sign in to disble this ad
Can anyone help me find the exact quote Gene Simmons made (I believe it was in Bass Guitar Magazine, already checked BP), where he says something about the bass defining the music? It was something like "A guitarist can play a C chord, but if I play a G, then then the band is playing a G."

Thanks.

Never heard of it. Sorry. Agreed about the power bass has to define, but not in that example. If the guitar plays a C chord and the bass plays a G chord, what you have is a C with a G bass, or C/G.

Can't help you with Gene, but the guitar player in my band said the same thing! I was missing a change to E and was staying in A. He said something along the lines of "If I play an E and you play an A, then the song is in A."

That sounds EXACTLY like what Sting said. I don't think it was Gene.

I'm certain that Gene said it, though I wouldn't be surprised if he stole it from Sting. Or if Sting stole it from him. I like Gene better so I'll say Sting stole it from him. Yeah.

Jaco says that too in Modern electric bass video (not exactly that). He say something like this "If i change my note it will mess the song up becouse of the vibe" it will not make a c into a g but it will definitly sound crazy. (sorry for miss spells)

I like Gene better too, but I saw Sting say it on TV.

Yeah, Gene actually wrote Walking on the Moon and Roxanne too. That sounds about right.

But he read it in bass guitar magazine first.

I went through all my damn bass magazines and the only one i seem to be missing is the one that quote is from. The one where he posed with 8000 playboy bunnies or something like that. I even have the Bass Frontiers magazine with the Simmon's interview. Bet a lot of you don't even remember that magazine.

Of all the bass mag issues in the world, the one you had to miss was that of the 8000 Playboy bunnies...

Forget about Gene.

I certainly don't remember that quote...

But the quote of the week last week from Gene Simmons Family Jewels had to be the surgical nurse during his facelift surgery "Now's the part Gene was most worried about... where his Shicksa meets the cathiter"... followed by "After listening to him, I expected it'd be a lot bigger"...

There's always been a huge misnomer among musicians that the "lowest" note being played at a given time determines the root. I'd be kind of surprised if Gene made that mistake, however.

Yeah, that's a Sting-ism. It's in a BP mag, forgot which issue. Do a search on the BP site.

^ From the March 2000 issue with Sting on the cover: What about the bass grabbed you?

"...on the bass you lead the band dynamically, you lead it harmonically - after all, it's a C chord only if you play a C. So I can have a lot of power without feeling like I'm dictating."

I have one issue with Simmons on the cover (July 96, no Playboy bunnies) and the only memorable quotes are him saying that women shouldn't play bass and being left-handed is the sign of the Beast.

Thanks. For some reason though I remember it having more of an edge to it... maybe he said it differently somewhere else, or maybe my memory just sucks. I appreciate the effort you put into it though.
