Help me find this bassist

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys, I ran across a video on youtube featuring a black guy on bass and a white guy on drums playing live at a convention of some sort.
They were playing this funky-jazz sort of thing.
The bassist used a very odd technique of playing where he used the left hand for fretting (normal of course), but used his right hand playing from under the body of the bass.
He would hike the bass up under his neck and use the right hand playing from underneath.
The guy is absolutely a fantastic funk bassist.
Problem is I can't find the video or remember his name.
Anyone know this guys name or know of the video???
Thanks for any help!

I wonder how he come up with that playing style?

Edit: I like some of the ignorant comment on some of his vids. "Unfunctional", "ugly" and a "****ing hack". Hey guys, where's your amazing Youtube jam? Oh let me guess, you have no absolutely no skill a couple of minutes to waste, so you decided to comment on something that mostly aesthetic. What about his shirt? Did that make his groove suck?

I agree with the last 2 posts...Believe me, when I found this guy, I wasn't looking for 'technically correct' form or technique. I was searching for (I think) funk jazz bass on youtube...
This guy came up. Let me say...The technical guys can say what they want (and I admire all of you...after all I'm a Dream Theater fanatic!).. but this guy...has found a way to rock this world in his own special way!!! Story over!!! He's different..but he's GOOD!!!

But ... why? I mean halfway through the video up there he starts to play normally and it sounds a lot better. His other way of playing can't be comfortable or anything.

Since I'm not a fan of relentless slap solos I got bored as soon as he DID start playing "normally" Otherwise, watching him is a little . . .unsettling, but it sure seems like he's comfortable enough doing it. It is rather weird to watch though.

ok, uhmm and ur point is...??? Like I said, this post wasn't meant to deal with technique in the beginning.. it was about finding the guy...!?
I found the guy...and obviously other bassists have found his style "interesting".... doesn't mean he's a 'normal' bassist.
So what??
Only point being made: (1) Quintin plays different (2) Quintin jams!!!!
You don't have to play (nor would I) his style, but just simply appreciate the guy for being who he is and being different while being in the professional market (mind you).

Berry used to play in cover bands around here. The 1st time I stumbled into a Va. Beach bar & saw him...I thought he was just fooling around (I do recall they were playing a Sponge tune).
Bass Frontiers did an article on him a few years ago...IIRC, they talked about his 'underhand' technique & why he learned the bass in that fashion.

I can probably dig out that magazine...I think Oteil (another guy that did the Va. Beach cover band thing) is on the cover.

Looks like his method would take a lot of pressure off of the shoulders and neck. Hmmm, I might try it...

Hey hey easy--did I say something critical? I don't think so. (I just said don't like ANY slap solos as a rule) I'm not making any point, just commenting on how he "plays different" as you say--but wait, then you say your post wasn't to address his technique And you earlier say you agree with the two posts one of which calls his style "strange" and the other is about his "playing style"
The guy is obviously amazing, I've said nothing to the contrary . . .

Anyhow, I had to try it myself and picked up my jazz and man, it's wild. I would like to watch him do it close-up and watch his right hand sometime just to see what he's doing. Wild.

^ Think of it like a piano's hammer hitting the strings. Quintin is using all of his right hand fingers in the same fasion. His placement is also how he gets that tone.

I've said this before, I think there is something in your water down there Jim. Have you ever noticed how many Va Beach players think and play outside the normal box*? Keith Horne is from there too, isn't he?

* a very good thing BTW
