Does anyone know who plays bass on the recording of A Night in Tunisia, on the CD : Jam Miami A Celebration of Latin Jazz, with Arturo Sandoval on trumpet and the latin jazz all star band?

I have looked for awhile now and have never been able to figure it out. I love the tone the bass player has on this recording! Sorry I can't provide a sample...

Avishai Cohen perhaps?

http://www.avishaimusic.com/

I know that show mostly has a core band with guests appearing. I think he was part of that stage band. I'm not 100% on this though.

It might be Nicky Orta, he has a history with Arturo. Great player!

Looked it up on Amazon.com. Avishai Cohen is listed on the cover.

Of course, in 2002, when this was apparently recorded, I was able to locate a web site that said bassist Andy Gonzalez was part of the group at that time... http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/wsas/jazz...all_stars.html

As far as I recall, I was the bass player on that cut. Jerry wins the prize. : )

P.S. Glad you like my tone. The sad thing is that the bass I used on that was stolen (well, I left it in a parking lot after a gig and THEN it was stolen).

I was going to guess Dennis Marks. But I guess Nicky has already swooped in and saved the day.

That is such a great bass line (night in tunisia).

It's incredible to read your bio, Nicky. You've done so much in two fields (playing and teaching both). Belated congratulations on the Grammy nomination. It's an honor to meet ya!

I should say it's an honor to be able to go out almost any night of the week and catch him playing around town. The dude is a serious contender.

It's been a while. I don't remember what gear they were using for that session. As far as my instrument set up. I was using my '82 Alembic Distillate and pretty much was just using the back pickup with a good deal of lows and mids in the amp EQ. That's about it. Also, they did a pretty decent job mixing that session. (I'm not sure it all sounded as great during the live performance.)

Hey Nicky, the first album I heard you on was Sandoval's 'Flight To Freedom', I really remember your playing on that album[shared with Anthony Jackson], did you use two different basses on Rene's Song? I love your solo on that song!

Hi Jerry,

Nope. That was the same bass. My trusty old (dearly departed) Alembic Distillate. It was fun recording that album. We got to see Anthony, Chick and Weckl record their tracks. They are truly great musicians.

Thanks for the info! That bass [and you] sounds great, almost fretless on your solo. It must have been cool to also work with the late great producer Joel Dorn on that CD.

Hey Jerry,

Thanks. Yeah, Joel was great. (I didn't know he had passed away, actually.) The whole experience on those sessions was, on the whole, very relaxed and positive. Hard to believe it was so long ago! Sheesh... I ain't getting any younger here! : )

So, you're in Hawaii? What's the music scene like over there?
