Not sure if it counts, but I used to be able to play Purple Haze (as well as Heartbreaker and Fade to Black) on my cello, solos and all. It wouldnt be too hard to transpose them.

I saw Mark Egan play "little wing" the other night, he tore it up

During the Electric Ladlyland sessions, Hendrix rerecorded many of Noel Redding's bass parts while Noel was out of the studio.

Jimi was very controlling of his bands sound

He gave Mitch Mitchell a little freedom, but he told Noel exactly what to play - every time

I can Imagine that Jimi could play Noels bass lines, but Noel was known for being very reliable and able to suck it up when it came to Bass Freedom

Can't imagine Jimi had to lay down Noels tracks too often, if at all...

All Along the Watchtower is a perfect example of Jimi on bass. I read on Eddie Kramer's site, he went in and recorded the tune (and bass line) very late at night after hearing a guy playing the song on acoustic at a party...took the acoustic guy in there with him too.
Eddie's story also said Jimi would bring a party crowd back to the studio, and Noel would get really irritated and just leave, so Jimi did have to cover bass sometimes.

You gotta remember, in that era especially, nobody cared who did it, as long as it just got done.

Seen this one? I think it's been posted on here before. Also, Jimi bringing people back to the studio and pissing Redding off is how Jack Casady came to play bass on the recording of "Voodoo Chile Slight Return"....back to OP, I think the bass versions are cool if well done! The Little Wing clip is great.
