Sharay Reed is smokin' hot on this song. The man's got a sense of groove that blows my mind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pATcv...eature=related

I'm always stupid and sweaty by the time I'm done playing a set and dudes like this are like, "What key? Oh yeah... Cool, let's go.." and they just go. I'm not a bad player but I suck when compared to guys like this. |

That way it gives me something to shoot for and I don't get complacent. Yeah, I'm not there either.

I don't think he pounded 8ths on the root note not ONCE in the entire clip....
I think its interesting to see someone play busy, and not sound busy. Everything fits, nothing strikes me as "too much".
There's more to overplaying than the # of notes... I love that percussive style also, try to do that myself... Perhaps with less success than that...

Randy | Exactly my point of starting this thread. Sharay is a perfect example of being able to play outside the box without playing outside the pocket. There are several other great examples I could have shown but this video popped up on my Facebook page so I used it. I think I've listened to this clip 15-20 times in the last 12 hours.

I know he's been on some gospel cd's and has at least one solo cd but I've never seen an instructional DVD or anything. However, that doesn't mean they don't exist. That just means that I'm out of the loop.

Well, not his playing, actually - he's killin' it - but rather his right hand. His wrist is bent forward almost at a 90º angle. In my opinion he's at risk for Carpal Tunnel problems at some future time. I prefer to play with my bass neck pickup centered over my belly button, and the neck angled up anywhere between 30º and 45º. This way both my left and right wrist are straight and my arms and hands are relaxed and ready to play.

Just noticed at the end there's a person behind him holding another bass. Wonder if that's a second bass for him, or a second player who came to play. He's probably wondering how he's supposed to follow an act like that haha.
