Here's a site with James Jamersons bass part isolated...

Found on the Fender forum:

http://www.ricksuchow.com/music-group-151.html

Full song high speed and modem links. Don't know if it was the guy running the site that isolated Jamersons bass parts, but I'm glad he put up the Mp3s. Hearing the original cuts played by the man himself without the other instruments really shows how complex Jamersons music was, and is.

Also had some rare Pastorius cuts in the music section- pretty cool site.

Enjoy!

That's what they call "gusto."

Thats the funk! If you listened to the drums or guitars soloed on that Motown stuff it would be just as sloppy. Then bring it together and it grooves like nothing else.

"If you don't feel it, don't play it."

Very famous quote there that goes along way toward explaining what you hear as sloppiness.

I hear power, passion, conviction and soul.

And I'll take that over technical proficiency any day, not that J.J. wasn't .

I'm shure he would have played a more "straight" line if he had to record with nothing else... everyone in those years... But, as it has been stated, it is not about your individual performance, you can listen how he gets with the rest of the instruments... He was an amazing bass player, he's severely underrated.

I think the P bass sounds terrible solo... but sounds wonderful in the mix!

I've noticed for years that many people sound "sloppy" solo, but sound magical with a group. Many people sound good alone, but lousy with a group. Regardless, if you could sit in a room with JJ, he'd blow your mind.
