He's a bassist and did not know

So my son, keyboards and vocals, decided to compose/arrange/play an instrumental "cruising" song. Ended up being 25 tracks altogether. His arrangement impressed me. The song impressed the hell outtta me. All the little pieces flowing in and out, and all the instruments, delighted me.

All of it was played on just a Casio Workstation keyboard with on-board effects.

Then I heard his bass line. He is not a bassist, but evidently really understands bass presentation.

Thought I'd share.

The song is called Dakota Blu' and here is the Myspace link. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Its the 5th or 6th one on his list of songs.

Very nice little groove. It sounds like he's listened to some Stevie Wonder.

Nice song! Is the tone he was going for? The song is good, but that sound really reminds me of cheesy presets from the 1980s.

Like I said, it was made on his Casio. They are cheesy presets.
I'd like to get him a more quality workstation keyboard, but we're both too poor right now to afford one.
It was his composition/arranging which really got me, not the tone.

Nice! Do you and your son ever play together?

Meaty, I like the song you linked to as well. What hardware/software did you use?

No, we do not.

He hears and observes me practicing, but I refuse to make bass parts for his songs which is where it would lead if we played together. Very occasionally I will break my rule and do a simple groove for him while he figures something out.
Seems harsh, huh?
I want HIM to develop bass parts to gain a broader sense within himself of instrumentalities and to exercise creativity in all the voicings he makes for his material.
I also do not want to "lead" him in a direction of a song he wants to make by the thrust of my bass playing. I think he actually agrees with my philosophy, but I admit it can also be partly because our styles are so different.

If I help him at all it is in some mixing,a bit of arranging and various critiques to include telling him if something sucks (and offer a couple of alternatives)---that's called "guidance" ( ). And we discuss music/theory exhaustively.

I think it works as he has made great strides in the short period of time he has been playing.

IMO, he's done a great job with the gear he's got. To create tangible music is no easy task, and to fill a song with noises from just a single instrument is skill. You have every right to be proud. He has talent.

Thank you. I think so also. And I love the little trumpet part in the middle of the song---nice touch.
